After reading all the posts here from last night/this morning.... I started to get nervous and almost regretting the can of worms I helped open up. I LOVE the set they way it is - all Denom. I would like them to be all non-denom almost as much - but the classic theme Ten desires almost mandate that all or at least 6 of them have to have denoms.
I can see and agree with arguments on making either blue or orange NCV, but I agree with MSPatton that making them BOTH NCV would likely take away from the sets overall goal of "class" or "classic"(that's assuming that most people even buy all 7 chips for their set). So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that making only one of them non-denom might be a good compromise without sacrifice.
So which one? Well, there are a million angles and many of them have been covered - so I guess instead of trying to summarize them all and offer a "best case" - I'll just decribe my situation and it will help my thought process to offer a best case for most: Here comes the rambling..... I/we play both cash games and tournaments about 50/50. Cash we currently play .25-3.00 spread limit using .25's, $1's and a few $5's if necessary. Our tourneys are 1000 or 1500 chips for random buy in $ for around 6 guys - we start with red as low denom. I want a set that will be able to grow with me over the years - if we go up in limits or with inflation the quarter might become obsolete over time. And I want to be able to accomodate ~20 tourney players. If the .25 was NCV it could be used as .50, 10, 50, 2500, 5000 or whatever including in tounamants. With the orange being NCV instead of the blue - I would still buy all seven chips and use the quarter as we do now and have the orange to be whatever we needed - cash or tournament would be covered forever, but the quarter being denom would almost certainly, eventually, become extinct in a cash setting - but could become 2500 for a tournament without me suffering too much pain. But now I have an orange that is NCV and a blue that is being used as a non-denom also, really.
I'm starting to wonder why I need to buy all seven regardless of denom - but with most chips haveing denoms you/I almost have to buy all of them in large numbers to have a "definitive set of a lifetime". So, I'm thinking that to cover all cash game situations and tournament into the unforseeable/distant future... I was planning on getting 2000 chips:
200 - .25
200 - $1
400 - $5
400 - $25
400 - $100
200 - $500
200 - $1000
I know that's overkill for my current situation, but with denoms you almost have to for the future. Jesus, I just can't decide if the .25 or the $1000 would be better for me, I agree that the 1-2 jump from 500 to 1000 make it close, but I hate to see the .25 become obsolete for me AND have a NCV 1000(as I already stated). So, I guess the I deal Classic looking set for me would be NCV(.25), 1, 5, 25, 100, 500, 2500. I suppose the reason that there are no 2500's offered in home sets is because the current tounamnet buys are much lower and even if you go with 10,000 in chips having a $1000 gives a player more chips to play with and not needing to color up ever time a 2500 is bet/used. That said, for MY definitive set, within Ten's likely offering, is to prefer NCV(.25), 1, 5, 25, 100, 500, 1000. Becasue I like the blue as a better color to fit into a cash scenario as .50, 2, 3, 4, 10, or whatever - and in tournys it could be a 2500, 5000 if necessary(very unlikey).
SOOOO...... My vote is (in order):
#1 All Denoms
#2 The NCV to be the .25
#2 The NCV to be the $1000
#3 Both as NCV
#5 All Non-denoms - inlays changed to not include extra symbols.
Damnit, now I'm starting to wonder when I'd ever use the $1000 chip and if I did in a tourney - then I'm overloading on reds(no longer used a the lowest starting denom) unless I need them all for future cash games.... AAARRGGGGG!!!! My head hurts!

Maybe it is better to have BOTH as NCV? But, if the .25 was the NCV then I could use it as the 1000, or 2500 if needed and not buy any 1000's. And MSPatton has shown that not that many will be sold anyway so it wouldn't "disrupt" most sets in the class department.... awe hell, maybe I'm just too anal. For christ's sakes Ten just make a decision and get it over with.

Bottom line: There is NO perfect set for everyone!!! Afterthought: In all reality for tournaments a 1000 chip would never be needed - unless you HAVE to go up for ego or realism - because all you really need is a few of 2-3 colors if you have a large # of people and have to make it work - all you have to do is adjust the time of each level.
I suppose the most ideal set for me would be:
.25 or NCV
1
5
25
100
500
And not need any 1000's but they're offered for those who do(especially Lumpy

). The .25 NCV in beautiful blue could be used by the white $1 haters as their $1(they're screwed if they need a .25 though).
My bottom line(finally): Ten, either make them all with denoms and each person has to "change" a chip or two to adjust to certain situations or have the blue be the only NCV. There I'm done.
