Cause of split edgespots??

I know there's been a lot of discussion about split edgespots from ASM (see this thread http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/custom...plit+edgespots). I've got a few, but thankfully not many. After the first 24 hours I never noticed them again.

Why I bring this up now is that I stumbled onto this older thread about chip manufacture http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/histor...clay-chip.html. It shows the edgespots being inserted into the base chip. They look like 1/4 edgespots, and look pretty solid.

It explains why and how edgespots would get squished during the compression phase of manufacture, but I can't resolve how edgespots would "split"

Re: Cause of split edgespots??

More dense base color material squishing into less dense spot color material when put under many tons of pressure I think is the explanation

...yeah, but I would have expected it to displace the edgespot, rather than break it in two right down the middle.

Well I'm guessing that since the whole thing is compressed in the mold, it has no place else to go. And since its being compressed from the top & bottom, the middle migrates, kind of like an oreo. Maybe JimB will chime in if he sees this.

I'd lay my money with this explanation.

Re: Cause of split edgespots??

Sorry all, I gotta do this...

[rant] I can't believe how big of an issue this has become. It is almost as irratating as the lead issue. I could understand if it affected the chip, but it is and has always been an issue with clay composition chips regardless of manufacturer. If it bugs you that much get a casino set of Bud Jones. [/rant]

I really like the chips in the OP's link. I think it adds character and shows that these things are hand made. They are sweet.

I didn't think he was complaining, just asking how/why. I like them too, each one has a unique look.
