New to the Scene

Okay so i spent the past couple of days talking to my friends and my dad. they are down to pitch in for a custom set for myself. The thing is I've never really delt with custom chips before so I really don't know what to look for.

I currently own a limited run(i think?) of composite 11.5 dice w/ World Series of Poker chips, 500 chip white, red, blue, green, black. I assume they are limited run becuase i cant find any other composite w/ dice with WSOP logo in it

My friends want me to stay composite because its cheaper and that way if we get a big game going we wont have to worry about tons of different colors or mixing of chips. plus I can't really find anything about custom logos and stuff being imprinted onto them.

I figure tho if i am going to get custom chips i should just do what i can w/ clay within my price range. I was looking at Pokerchips.com and thinking about getting a 300 set now and a 300set later. The reasoning behind is because our average home game is about 7-9 players and depending how early in the day we start we will either run a T10000
T25 x8 x0
T100 x8 x10
T500 x4 x4
T1000 x2 x2
T5000 x1 or x1
so at most we will need around
72
90
54
45
9
thats only 270 so lets round som of this off eh?
80
90
60
50
20
Would this look about right? What you you recommend as a Cheap yet still have a Quality feel... I want a logo to go on the chip but i'm not sure if that is possible to do by myself or if it needs to be done while the chip is being ran/made.

Any help with this will be greatly appriciated

Re: New to the Scene

PokerChips.com (JimB on CT) just posted a special for solid chips w/ inlays on the hourglass mold or A mold. 15% off during July and orders ship within 3 weeks. This would probably suit you well. Their chips are very nice and made with care and attention to detail. I prefer the hourglass chips myself. They will also help you with a design for free! I don't see how you could go wrong with this offer.

Re: New to the Scene

I'm assuming an inlay is the deeper section in the center of the chip? Looking at the site i'm assuming the order your talking about is
Clay Chip with Printed Center / Printed Center without Mold Design
if so then i really dont want to pay .90 per chip.

I am a graphic artist. I've been playing around with logos and stuff for the past couple years, so coming up with a design is no problem.
I read something via another topic about being able to print out the logos and puttin them on the chips myself? possibly save myself money that way?

Re: New to the Scene

They'd be about 77 cents a piece with the July special they are running for chiptalk members.

You won't find custom clays for a better price anywhere. You could settle for some chinese junk, but if you're going to spend the money you should spend it on a quality chip you'll have forever.

The inlay is what some may call the label, but on a real clay chip it is an integral part as its applied during the manufacturing of the chip and pressed into the clay when the mold is applied.

Re: New to the Scene

Yes those are the chips I'm talking about. So with the discount you are looking at .77/chip.

You can also buy some of their blank hourglass mold chips at .50/chip and have labels made. I know Joe at PalmImports had a thread going about successful labels on the hourglass mold. I'm not sure the cost of doing that would be less though in the long run. And IMO they wouldn't be as nice as having the actual labels "inlaid" into the chip.

As for quality clay chips with inlays though, I don't think you will find a cheaper price than these (when you factor in the art charges that others might charge).

You may also want to contact Palm Imports about their "solid wall" solid color chinese clays. These are solid color chips at an inexpensive price that feel and sound better than 11.5g chips for a very reasonable cost. I don't know the cost but i know they are a good deal. I'd search the forums for "solid wall" to find some examples of other's chips. If you are on a budget, I'd probably look at these and at least get some samples to evaluate them for yourself.

Edit: Looks like JM beat me to it. He makes great points about spending the extra now to get a higher quality set that you will be happy with for years to come.

Re: New to the Scene

Now does the 15% deal work with edge spots too? or no.. altho I will probably go with just the flat color, because .77 sounds better than 1.10, altho the edge spots do add a little extra spice..
wait... its june not july lol

well if the deal is during july that does give me a little extra time to play around with label designs.

I think it is solids only (w/ inlays).

Re: New to the Scene

Didn't want to make a new thread to ask a probaly stupid question.

Anyways I got my Mockup up and also Semi-Final Draft of the Artwork for the Inlays I want done. Now what i want to know is if i call and we start the back& forth on artwork checking double checking and finalizing. Is that first call the start of the order. Or is when Artwork is Finalized the start of the order?

I assume that it would take about a week or two from today(maybe longer) for artwork to be finalized, which by then it would be july. Or would that count as a June order?

Also I have another batch of chips that i want done which cost 1.60per chip. Would I have to order a whole other set of 300 since it is a different catagory, or the the minimum order of 300 for the order in total?

again i appologise for all the questions

I talked to Cathy about the same thing, since I already had an order going just before the July special came out. She said the solid and spotted chips would have to be on a seperate order, each with a 300 minimum.

I would talk to Cathy and ask if the artwork has to be finalized during July for it to count. I'm thinking not, but always better safe than sorry.
