Anyone else a sucker for simple / retro looking chips?

Even with all the new insert patterns opening up, I kind of prefer simpler chips - like what would have been seen in Vegas' early days. I'm really tempted to get the ball rolling on a very "basic" ASM set very similar to what's below. Different inlay, of course.

What do you think? Example uses NJ/NV colors for the base & CA colors for the inserts.

Re: Anyone else a sucker for simple / retro looking chips?

Damon,

The spots are looking good! Very vintage.

I was shooting for the same kind of feel with the Lounge set (your sample set is in the mail as of Tuesday AM). I flipped through the photos in the Campiglia & Wells guide, but the photos here:

Nevada Chip Pictures

also helped. You need to pay attention to the years the casino was open, as well as the overall "look" of the chip too.

Regardless, I think you are on the right track. Solids, 214, 314 and the occasional 414 and half pie are spot on. Probably pretty thin on DG colors too.

Good luck with this. A great theme and feeling to go for. Totally classic! Keep up posted!

Re: Anyone else a sucker for simple / retro looking chips?

Thanks for the compliment and for the link. I went through about half of that page very quickly. I don't really intend to mimic a particular rack from specific casino. However, it's funny that 2 of my example chips are nearly identical to a couple of "Flamingo Casino" chips from the 1940's.

Re: Anyone else a sucker for simple / retro looking chips?

I am a huge fan of vintage chips, as I'm sure are quite a few CTers. One thing to keep in mind when putting a vintage set together is that it's not only the edgespots that make it so, but the inlay will play a huge part in the feel of the set. There a lot of sets that have come through here, even recently, that have simple edgespots, but to get the vintage feel you're going to need a vintage inlay.

I'm excited to see where you'll take this set if you're serious about building it. That 100 will be sick

Re: Anyone else a sucker for simple / retro looking chips?

Was thinking I'd like a black inlay like albinodragon's "Lounge" chips, so I did another mockup using an inlay from a Flamingo roulette chip form the late 40's.

What do you think about the black inlay?

For some reason black inlay just LOOKS vintage. If you can nail the text and graphics this will be a great looking set.

I'd use the H-mold I think it has a vintage look as well.

Here's my retro cash set $1 & $5's

Re: Anyone else a sucker for simple / retro looking chips?

Great mock up. But as for the insert progression I'D use the 412.
