Custom label design questions

Hey everybody,
First off, let me say that this forum is awesome. After using my buddies Paulsons, I was inspired to upgrade my chips. I would like to get a custom set, but I have zero knowledge when it comes to using Photoshop. I see all of the mockups on here and they are amazing. Hopefully someone can clear up a few questions that I have:
1. How do you pull images for the inlay? I would like to have a tribute to the KGB Bear in Rounders using a black profile image of my dog (German Shorthaired Pointer). I've found a few images on the web, but they are incorporated into a larger picture. Can you remove an image from a larger picture?

2. Is it ok to borrow the inlay design from another board member? I've seen several on here that look really good. I've been emailing Jason at personalpokerchips.com about printing labels. Would it be ok to send him a picture from the forums of the type of label that I want. As much as I like the idea of creating my own label, I really have no idea what I'm doing.

I've attached an example of the image that I have in mind, but don't know if it's possible to reproduce it on a label. Any advice or assistance that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like a fun idea. You (while using that pronoun, I mean someone with Photoshop understanding) are able to do most anything in Photoshop. You just have to know how. Things with stray hair cause more problems then straight lined items (like a block or poker chips) but it is doable.

I'm pretty sure you are looking for a different word than "borrow". If you mean, "steal", than no. If you mean "get permission to use", then yes. Get someone to help you create your labels if you aren't sure what you are doing, don't just take someone else's idea. There are a lot of people who I'm sure are willing and can help you.

I'd help with the design, but I'm new to the process of creating chips, so I may not be as much help as some others around here with more experience...

Re: Custom label design questions

Hi there.

Just a thought, but if you're struggling to actually reproduce your label for your chip as you want it, why not try a company that specialise in doing this, such as this label printing company.

Not to be a scutch here-- but.. it seems that youre in the label business--might I suggest rather then self promote your business within the threads here on Chiptalk that you speak with Greg- the owner- and ponder becoming a sponser of this community

Just my two cents.

Joe

Re: Custom label design questions

I would heartily add my second to Joe's comments! I love the non-solicitous interaction between the vendors and members and absolutely believe that it builds better relationships and better business in the long haul. I am not a fan of aggressive pro-active solicitation and would definitely stear clear of anyone doing it ... which is odd as I am a big NASCAR fan. Go figure! LMAO!

Sothpaw : There are a handful of folks on the boards here that would probably be VERY willing to help you with your label (which I LOVE the idea BTW ). I think the concept is simple enough that it shouldn't be too tough. I would actually offer to help but I can often procrastinate and get wrapped up in my own projects and end up delaying what should be an otherwise exciting process. I would hate to get someone all excited then leave them hanging. It's not my most flattering personality trait, but I am learning to deal with it ...

When using other people's ideas DEFINITELY secure permission before lifting the design for your own purposes. I suspect that as long as you are not generating a profit from it's use most people would not have too much of a problem.

I have mentioned in previous posts though, before you copy someone else's design I would STRONGLY encourage you to find someone to work with and see if you can come up with something of your own. The whole thrill of having custom chips made is to have something unique and personal. If you copy someone else's idea then you just have someone else's chips.

Just my 2C.

I am very excited to see how your 'Rounders' chips turn out!! Good luck ... if you absolutely can't find anyone to help you with it in like a week or so, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do for you. I really like the idea!

Good Luck!
- Gary
