I wont have more details till next week but we just learned a custom ceramic order were doing is being launched into space by Nasa to 100,000 feet and being returned back to earth.
I havent a clue why- but found it interesting.
My biggest fear is that they fall loosely to earth and blast some guy or gal in the head at 140+ MPH
As soon as I get all the details on this crazy project I'll update the post.
Really wierd

Due to budget concerns, NASA is looking for an inexpensive replacement for the tiles on the underside of the shuttle. They want to see how your ceramics stand up to the temps experienced during re-entry.
I guess it gets pretty boring up in the ISS. Five Astronauts, three Cosmonauts, a deck of cards.....and metal slugged chips won't pass through the detectors! hahaha...
If they ask for a quick design to see how the printing will hold up...print a picture of The Great Space Coaster on there.

Congrats on this definitely strange use for chips! One nit to pick though....
100,000 ft = 18.9 miles. Pretty far up, but a far stretch to "space". Airliners run between 30,000 and 40,000 feet. The formal definition of space is 100km = appx. 62 miles appx. = 328,000feet.
I'd love to know what they are trying to accomplish (or learn).
Sounds to me like they might take your chips on one of those "zero g" flights aboard a plane flying on a parabolic trajectory (the Vomit Comet). I think they sometimes take students to do experiments in weightlessness. Trying to do chip tricks in zero g would indeed be an interesting project!
