Chips: 15 | | | BEst chips for my limitted budget? I really could use some expert advice about some different chips...
I have done lots of reading on the site but have not found much about Progen chips. I really would like to upgrade my chips from my cheap dice to either Progens or NExgen lucky bees. Unfortunately my budget does not allow me to splurge too much on chips, and all my games are fun games at my house. So these are probably the best next step for me.
Personally I find the Progens visibly appealing, but I am a bit concerned as there is not much written about them! I do wish to customize my new chips with some good lables! Can anyone give me some feedback on the PROGENS and compare them the the NEXGENS? I would really appreciate it!
I am looking at buying around 600-700 chips so I want to do this right! |

Chips: 1,051 | | | Re: BEst chips for my limitted budget? Buy samples of both before doing anything more. Also buy samples of any other chips you might be considering. Once you've got your samples in hand you should handle them LOTS to get a good feel for what they're like in all respects. How do they shuffle, stack, wear, look, feel and sound? Finally, how do they compare to each other. Folks here can only offer their opinion. They're not in your head though so don't know what your preference would be.

Chips: 340 | | | Re: BEst chips for my limitted budget? Just wondering...what sort of games do you usually play? And how many people do you need to cater for?
Unless you're planning a cash set and a tournament set or catering for 20 people, you may be able to put together a set with less chips and so be able to spend more per chip (perhaps some ceramics). You'd be surprised how much use you can make of a limited number of chips (I certainly was - originally, in my mind, 500 chips would cater for 10 people. Now I've put together a 200 chip travel set that can seat 9 comfortably!)
Anyway, just something to think about. If you're sure about the numbers and want customs then something like the Progens or Nexgens (Nexgens are too slippery for me!) which can take a label easily is probably the way to go. If you don't mind having a limited number of different color choices then you can label faux clay with a thin vinyl label. For more on the progens, there are already a couple of threads with others' thoughts. Using the "Search" function above can find them but here's a few comments I found: http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/poker-...tml#post610906
Good luck with your decision.

David. |

My personal opinion of the Progens - they suck! They feel like hard rubber, they break rather easily and they smell horrible. I know others may disagree, and I respect that, but imho - stay away. Your $$ is much better spent on some of the other "cheaper" chips suggested in other posts. Nexgens are excellent if you don't mind a heavier chips and I hear Sopranos and Faux Clays are great too. I would be more than happy to send you some Progen samples for free to help in your decision. PM your address and I'll have them in the mail to you this weekend (I'm away for a few days).

Chips: 15 | | | Re: BEst chips for my limitted budget? Thanks for the advice so far! Progens have a funny smell?
For numbers we have a local league where we average 8-10 guys per game.
We usually try to start with a good stack of chips around 60 chips each.
20- $25 20 - $50 20 -$100
Hence the larger number of chips. I could pull it off with about 500 chips I assume to have a few extra to chip up! But we do have the odd game that can have 14-20 guys..
I will do a bit of digging on the Sopranos and Faux Clays to look at them and learn more.
Phil...thanks for the offer of some samples...but wont be required. Earlier tonight I order a sample set and hope to have them in the next week or so....if they dont get to me I will send you a PM!

Chips: 1,037 | | | Re: BEst chips for my limitted budget? Only Red and White Faux Clays are available (I think there are only a few hundred Green left) so this might play a role in your decision.
Sopranos would be a good option. And at only $0.0757/chip (DCG.com) they would only cost you $53 plus shipping for 700 chips.
Super Diamons are really inexpensive too. Consistency was hit and miss in my experience. It seemed as though I got chips from three different batches/production runs. The good ones were REALLY good though.
Good luck!

Chips: 46 | | | Re: BEst chips for my limitted budget? I would recommend getting Progen samples (my samples did not have any odor I noticed) for cheap chips I think they have a great feel, closer to clay than any other chips. Faux clays are too bland and slippery, nexgens feel like rubber...get some Progen samples, bet you'll like 'em.

Chips: 15 | | | Re: BEst chips for my limitted budget? I got my PROGEN samples today and over all I am very happy with the feel, sound and colors. I a bit of a freak of nature and have no sence of smell so I could not tell you if there is an odor or not. I guess the Mrs. will have to let me know.
99%evil was right, so far I really like the progens.
The only thing that I would say I dislike about them is that there are some mold dimples on face of the chips. Not a biggie but if you were expecting perfection I guess you would pay for the higher end chips....
Overall, I am satisfied. They stack great and shuffle good too. They are not as plasticy as the NExgen Bee's which I also like. |
