Chips: 44 | | | Taking the Faux Dying Plunge!! Tips?? I'm going to take the plunge, buy 1,200 white faux clays, and dye them for my tournament set. Any tips? Anything special to do with the dye? Boil water, dump water, premixed dye, and chips in a bucket, wait 20 minutes and stir occassionally...anything else? Has anyone had any problem with the dye wearing off after awhile?
Also, and tips for the staz-on? I'm trying to order some custom stamps, so I'm looking forward to this little project. |

I think I added too much (approx 1/3 bottle of Rit Tangerine) to the water, and they hit perfect color in about 20 mins. I would have liked for them to soak more, but I didnt want them to get too dark.
p.s. A little white vinegar in the mix seems to help the soak in also.
Good luck.

The dying doesn't take long, but the stirring is key. YOu don't want blotching or unbalanced coloring. Prep your area as well. No matter how careful you are there will be splashing onto your clothes, counter, or whatever.
With the Staz-On, do not over ink and do not overpress. That's all there is to it. You need the right amount of ink and the right amount of pressure. Find a reference point on the chip. I lined all mine up to the DICE1 Spot, so I used a few millimeters above the DICE6 spot, stared at that mofo, lined up the stamp and pressed. Don't hesitate. One clean motion is best, and try to get as even a press as possible. Don't roll the stamp across the surface, press it flat in one motion.
Thats all. It's fun and worthwhile. And you feel pretty good making your own chips. Don't forget the pr0n show afterwards.

I agree, the KEY is the constant stirring.
My Method:
Bring water to boil,
Add vinegar (three jiggers work for me)
add RIT (two jiggers worked for me)
stir,
Add chips 1 by 1, fairly quickly though, stirring them in.
Let sit for 10-20 minutes,
Take out, rinse off with cold water, let dry.

When pouring a full bottle, turned 90 degrees, it'll go GLUG GLUG (hows THAT for an explanation). Each Glug is a jigger.
In real life, the jigger is the pouring thing inserted into liquor bottles to pour measured, controllable amounts. |
