Textured vs Smooth Image Quality

First of all, I do plan to order samples. . . but I was curious about other's opinions.

Image Quality: When you get a textured chip versus a smooth chip, does it effect the quality of the image much? I would love to see a scan of a textured and a smooth chip with the same design side by side if anyone has this.

Slippery Feel: Is the general opinion that smooth chips are just too slippery to enjoy? I am not a big shuffler, but want them to be easy to stack. When people say they are "slippery" how bad are they? Are they worse then plastic dice chips?

Thanks!

Re: Textured vs Smooth Image Quality

Many different things affect image clarity i think, and im not a designer but have noticed this in my own experiences.
Chipco has a smooth finish with good clarity, but not slippery. The Sun fly chips i have w/ texture do show some compromise in clarity, and can still be slippery. I have seen pictures of smooth abc's with amazing image display, but that was not my opinion of the samples i received. I have also seen great pictures of graphics on Sun fly as well.

My set is chipco, and i love their satin texture. I believe i got into trouble with my design, because of using a gradient, and Chiplab's experience being so new.

I have come to think a great design from someone with experience may get someone the best image. If you are doing your design yourself, it would be helpful to show your design here and let the experienced designers give you whatever feedback they are willing to share.

The feel of the chip and playability you will just have to feel and decide for yourself from samples... Good luck.

Thanks for the information. I am working with one of the designers here, and am extremly pleased so far. That is why I am curious about the image on the actual chip. I am so please with the chip design thus far, that I do not want to be dissapointed when I finally see it on the chip. I most likely will order prototypes of both styles (sigh. . . $$$).

Your post made me realize I never stated I was looking at Ceramic chips. The link you reference is about clay inlays. Sorry for not being clear.

Re: Textured vs Smooth Image Quality

This has been been discussed a great deal. I will save you the search. I went through my old subscribed threads. There are other threads out there too along with scans and hi-res pictures of the Bellagios and a couple other designs comparing the two surfaces. You just have to look.

I'm pretty sure this is discussed in one of these threads, but I'm not going to reread everything- A textured chip "absorbs", for lack of a better term, more ink and tends to be somewhat darker than a smooth chip with the exact same design. A textured chip will lack some of the clarity of a smooth one, but this can be minimized with a good design. Joe at PI knows those tricks and could steer you in the right direction after looking at your design should you choose to go with textured chips. He will also print your design on both chips and send pics of them to you before your entire order is run, albeit not for free.

I prefer smooth chips and find textured ones to be somewhat slipperier. Here's why. The surface is not irregular like sandpaper, it is like tiny evenly spaced pyramids that do not mesh. (In one of the linked threads, Matt shows a diagram.) Imagine how much surface to surface contact you have if you took Legos and put the little posts facing each other. Not much.

Thanks the3rd! I had tried to search but kept finding too many responses. Those were the ones I needed to read.

It seems to me like smooth is the way to go for me, as image quality is a premium. Textured just seems to offer limited benefits (chip sound is very low on my priority list).

Thanks again!

Re: Textured vs Smooth Image Quality

In my opinion, there is no print quality difference. Atleast I have never been able to see any real difference between the two. Also, I've tried shuffling both types for quite a bit and they also seem pretty much identical as far as grippyness goes. It's hard to get an opinion if you only watch a scan of one smooth and one textured chips. When you have seen thousands you get a better idea

Anyway, ordering samples might help. But I think you will only find out that they are more alike than you expected.

Matt
