Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

I'm unsure if this is the case...my ASM inlays have the same texture as the adjacent clay, leading me to think they are pressed into the chip during compression. The texture seems continuous at the interface between the clay and the inlay.

The chips themselves are beautiful, I just feel that the inlays are the achiles heel of these chips and really drag them down. BC has their flaws too, but at least their inlays are pressed into the chip during the compression process. This is a huge discriminator in my book.

no, they're glued...I've pulled some apart...

but out of 3,600 chips, I have about 40-60 bad ones....but even still, more extras than defective...

(and mine were only $1.06 each on average)

Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

I think they're glued to keep them from slipping just before they're compressed into the chip.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that glue is applied to the label before it is put onto the chip and then compressed. I believe I read it over at homepokertourney.

EDIT: Here's the link: http://www.homepokertourney.com/chips-hpt.htm

Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

That seems more reasonable to me...and consistent with what I see with my chips with respect to the textural difference (rather, a lack thereof) between the inlay and the bit of clay that surrounds it.

Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

Maybe ASM has changed their process or glue lately.

I have customs received Dec. 05' and no peeling. I had a few where the label was slightly off center. Also one with a slight bubble. Interestingly, I had one of JM's Casino Antarctica samples that had a bubble too. I put it into an airtight to use as a card protector. A month later, I took it out and the bubble had gone away. Maybe there was some type of vacuum effect or something.

I suppose we are all extra sensitive when it comes to our customs being perfect. I'm sorry you had some problems. Try contacting their customer service people and see what they say.

Hi Strange.
Are you still willing to sell your red Samurais? I bought a ton of chip samples. I like my 1000 FC set, but have always wanted something real sweet. At first the Mardi Gras were going to be my choice, then came the Paulson Worlds. But the more I shuffle the Samurai's, the more I am falling in love with them.

The thing preventing me from starting my new collection with the Samurais is that I would have to use the 500 chip probably if i wanted to do a cash game. I reall like the look of the purple, but it seems a little funny to drop so much coin on nice 25c and $1 chips and then combine them with a 500 chip. Let me know if you are still interested.
Thanks,
--- Noobie

Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

Since nobody knows for sure, maybe we shouldn't speculate too much. My personal opinion, is that yes, these inlays are pressed on (under extreme pressure) during molding, with a dab of contact cement. However, with any hand made object, there's bound to be minute issues from run to run. Looking at my samples, you can clearly see slight ripples in the label, which are the same as the slight ripples in the clay from the intense pressure it undergoes. It's easier to see this on a grand inlay chip like the FDL mold, but it's there.

Also, as per the FAQ on ASM's website:

"With a printed center custom chip, the printing is protected by clear PVC vinyl and molded directly into the body of the chip."

and

"Chips should be stored in a cool dry place away from direct sun light. When traveling with chips, never leave them in a locked car on a hot day. Temperatures inside a locked car can reach 150 degrees or more. These conditions may damage your chips."

This issue has been brought up before, but I think it's a pretty isolated case, unlike the warping & misshapen labels exhibited in other chips. Keep in mind, these are hand made, by people!
