Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

With our weekly used 6 month old set of 1000 we have not seen a problem yet...

Hmmm....

I'd go apesh!t on them if anything did though.

Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

I have no opinion on this issue, as I don't own any.

Some insight however: They cement the inlays in place with contact cement, correct?

Contact cement today can't hold a candle to contact cement 15 years ago. VOC's and all... it sucks now. We (carpet layers) have had to find alternates for contact cement as it's not holding the molding between carpet and VCT anymore. Did I mention it sucks now? Sucks.

20 year old procedure with modern materials doesn't always work.

BTW: Don't "hold a candle to" any contact cement, that stuff is explosive!

Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

storage of the chips may play a big part with asm. drastic heat or cold or a sudden change in temp could cause the label, which is glued in the first place to come of. I have found that the asm lables pop off very easy with any sharp object. try digging out a paulson or blue chip inlay.

its the only reason i dont have any custom asms.

I have 650, in 4 different color/edgespot combos. On one of the combos (man red 614 DG pink) I have about 5-6 chips, where there was an air pocket in the center of the inlay. I only know this because I had heard of this issue, so I have meticulously checked every chip I have. The only reason I know these have an air pocket is you can hear/feel the inlay depress slightly if you do this. Sometimes you have to do it 3-4 times to be sure. I have these segregated and don't use them. ASM had orginally sent me 30 extra of these chips anyway, so I figured I was ahead in the game. I have been using all the other chips for a few months now and have not had one problem with a label coming off.

I would say that in my experience with ASM from a customer service standpoint, if you purchased chips from ASM and had this problem, that they would replace the chips - no questions asked. I also don't think that it is a widespread problem.

I think each manufacturer has certain "issues". With ASM, this seems to be the one - Blue chip was/is "out of round" inlays, now Paulson has a warping issue. I can rememeber when the Pharoahs first came out and we discovered that certain colors stacks are higher than others. I just don't think that the net-net of these "issues" means that one companies chips suck and another are good. To each his own. I, obviously, like ASM. Jojo, obviously, doesn't. But I really think we have to work on quantifying the problem before throwing somebody under the bus.

You should call ASM regards your 20 chips, my guess is they will make it right.

Humidity probably plays a big part. The more humid areas of the country had contact cement failures before anyone else in the flooring industry.

Anecdotal, not scientific.

Re: Sigh.... now ASM's have problems

I'm sorry but GLUED INLAYS? $1.40 a chip - C'mon.. If I pay $1.40 a chip I just can't accept the idea of glued inlays.. The chips themselves are beautiful, I just feel that the inlays are the achiles heel of these chips and really drag them down. BC has their flaws too, but at least their inlays are pressed into the chip during the compression process. This is a huge discriminator in my book.
