Talking Custom Chipco Question

This website has been a great source of information for me while I have been looking to get a set of custom poker chips. It seems everyone here has an abundance of knowledge on all aspects of poker chips. I am what you would call newbie, so am I asking for your help.

I researched as much information as possible on the types of chips I wanted going to various websites as well as getting samples. After 6 months of looking at design possibilities, feel, edging, wear, etc. , I decided to go with Custom Chipco's.

That being said I was deciding between Homepokerchips.com and thechiplab.com. I spoke with both owners and because of monitary reasons I went with thechiplab.com. (About $595 cheaper, for exact same design and edgespots) Drew was extremely helpful in getting my design to come out. (I will post designs and edgespots tommorow, as I just got chips tonight and my camera needs to be charged.)

After the final design was sent in, in 3 weeks I got my set of 1000 chipco's. I was pleased with the outcome, BUT...

1) From what I have researched, I thought the "white ring" around the edge of the chip should be symmetrical, having the same diatnce on each side. It seems that some of my chips are very slightly off center? 1) Is this supposed to happen? 2) If yes, what portion of the chips should be off-center? 10% 20%...Now I am not a huge stickler, I am just curious, because if they should have some movement I have no issues. Thechiplab.com has a full refund or replacemnet policy, so i am not worried. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

2) I have text on my edges, my multicolored spots seem to run. This may have been my fault. Multicolored edge goes like this-I have text ,then a white space, black space with denomination in it, then white, then text. It seem that the black seems to fade out near the top and bottom of the edge. I guess bleeding into it. Is that due to my colors or should that happen often? It doesn't look that horrible, my wife didn't notice it till I told her, but I was scrutinizing my chips. I mean i did shell out $1000. I want them done right.

I do want to satythat the chip design is great and i am satisfied with their customer service. Since I am new to all of this, making more informed desicions in the future will help me get the best chip made out there. Thanks for any help.

Re: Custom Chipco Question

I have had my custom chipco set for about 3 years now. The white ring is not always symetric as far as size all around the edge of the chip. I would say that most(about 90%) of mine are really, really close to dead on center, but there are about 10% of them that are off when you scrutinize the chip as you say. The guys at my game have always loved playing with them and have never said a thing. What you are doing is normal when you spend $1000 and wait weeks to get new chips. Other than the birth of another child and love of wife and kids, the days I get new chips are my happiest moments .....sick, I know, but who hasn't said this is a sickness anyway...

I too have text on the rolling edge, and if one get's close enough there can be bleed and some blurryness on some chips. Again, when they are your chips, you will notice this immediately, but it will be seldom if ever noticed by anyone else that is completely WOWED by your chips each and every time they play with them.

I would check with the ChipLab and see if they can fix some of the edge problems if they bother you that much. You may find that they can, it never hurts to ask.

Congrats on your new set of Chipco's, you'll love them....

Well... its basically a centering issue- that white ring is difficult to get precisely centered--- with that said- its common for some to be not dead-on.
With the larger ceramic makers, you will see this more then the smaller operations- only becauase of the sheer volume being printed each day. A small company doing only a few sets a day can take the time and effort to ensure accuracy- the big boys who run maybe 5000-10000 chips a day or more- theyre not going to spend the additional time to QC every chip.

Also- artwork comes into play alot-
I try to avoid artwork that requires that white ring- primarily because our pricing structure doesnt allow me to spend the additional hours required for dead on accuracy. Some customers insist on this- and they are charged a higher chip price . Meaning- it can be done.

WIth that said--- one can argue that if youre spending .50-.55 for a ceramic chip this slight inaccuracy is acceptable- if youre spending .75-.90 per chip- it isnt acceptable.\

I'm not really sure whats acceptable- it varies from customer to customer- Ive had people complain if there is the slightest variations, and others say they could care less-

But from experience- this is not unusual to have some off center slightly.

Regarding bleed- it occurs with certain color combinations more then with others-- one of these days I will post a thread detailing the color combinations to try and avoid- weve been keeping data on the problem colors etc so we will post this soon.

Re: Custom Chipco Question

Thanks for some of that info. Definately helpful in deciding whetehr ot not I'm going to send any back. Doesn't look like I am considering when i asked my wife what was wrong the chips she mentioned the dimple and is "the picture suppossed to flip when turn the chip over. She never noticed the bleed or the off center so I guess i am very scrutinizing. I am sure my friends will be wowed. Here are some pics. Do I upload these in another section for all to see. Hope you like.

And that remark about getting chips for the first time. For a first timer, yeah I was psyched. I stayed up till 2 AM just looking at them. My wife was like where the hell were you?

I was going to offer my summation on the centering issues after seeing your chips- but after thinking about it- its hard to do this as it can be construed as being critical of our competition- its tough for me to reply to posts sometimes because we make chips- and what we say can be seen as either supportive of fellow businesses-- when what we say is good- and as attacking the competition when what we say is bad LOL-
so I will let the CT members offer their thoughts

The chipset BTW looks awesome- not sure if Drew did the artwork or you did but it came out great

Re: Custom Chipco Question

Ok, now that I've seen them, I would say that you have the normal variance when compared to my chip set. And, awesome set by the way - great job on the artwork and color combos.

We want perfect, we can't get perfect, but these are damn close when you look at them objectively. I'd wager to say that no matter which vendor you choose that you would have some variance between what they produce and what you would think is perfect, that's just the way it is. For example, check out the historical group buy threads, a few of which I've been a part of, and notice the negative comments for those wanting and expecting absolute perfection when they first get their set. Then, notice how when it's taken in perspective in the next two weeks how they 'forget' the imperfections.

Like I said before, I think your vendor is going to look at the chips and will give you an honest reply as to whether the chips are within tolerances, and I in no way represent any vendor here, but these seem to be normal variances in manufacture -

Congraulations on a very, very nice chip set. May they bring you much luck in the future.

Well said- making ceramic chips is NOT an easy task-- add a white ring and it adds to the mayhem. Add text on edge- and its starting to be a bad day LOL
Have it ALL on the same chip-- ah jeez--

They look great- use em- enjoy em-
