Please help - router bit issue - for custom trays

Hey-

I'm at work, and don't have a chip with me, but I'm trying to buy a router bit to make a rack. Could someone out there measure the diameter of an H-Mold ASM chip for me?

Thanks in advance!!

Brandy

Re: Please help - sizing issue..

39.6 mm = 1.559"
You probably won't find a suitable straight cut router bit. Try a Forstner bit in 1 5/8"

1 9/16" = 1.563" (too tight for a rack)
1 19/32" = 1.594"
1 5/8" = 1.625" (an available size)

Re: Please help - sizing issue..

I was hoping to find a core box bit....but the bigggest I've seen in 1 1/2"

I guess i need 1 5/8" as Sparky recommended...?

I was hoping to do some larger racks that would be too long for the drill press.....

I think I saw a post on scottkeen about someone useing a 1.5" bit but making several depth cuts and a couple side cuts to make the slot wider.

Re: Please help - router bit issue - for custom trays

Didn't PeteRod use a router bit on his tables. I'd ask him if it were me.

Hope this helps, I know he did a couple round tables(1 was even in a contest to be given away, sadly no winner).....They were always awesome stuff.

Re: Please help - router bit issue - for custom trays

On a related note...

I am in the process of building a rolling cabinet to store my poker gear. Think of it as a mutli drawer "mechanics toolbox", only made of wood capable od storing 4-5k chips as well as cards, buttons, poker genie etc. I am at the point of needing to fabricate chips trays with storage of 100+ chips per row 10-12 rows wide.
I was thinking about doing the router method as well until I noticed some scrap Cove Molding in my shop. It has a a simple concave curve the exact size and shape of a chip (see profile below). By putting two of these edge to edge they form the perfect trough to hold chips. You can adjust them further apart if needed to compensate for different diameters. Trim the flat edge to reduce the width between rows. They can be painted, stained or covered with velvet if thats your desire.

I figure, why re-invent the wheel? These will work perfect for my application and I don't need to worry about goofing up any material machining them myself (or locating the (probably expensive bit(s) I need).

I am going to start a new thread later tonight with actual pics of my process.

Not the best pic but gives you the jist of what I am talking about.

Re: Please help - router bit issue - for custom trays

I use plastic 1000 chip inventory trays for my chips. They have pockets that hold exactly 20 chips per. This makes it very easy to dispence chips out and easy to see if any are missing at the end of the night. Think about making a nice wood pull out drawer that fit one of these trays nice and tight.
