To Custom or Not To Custom...

that is the question. Seriously, though, should I get custom chips or high quality Paulsons or the like. This probably isn't the right place to ask, kind of like going to an RC church for advice on which religon I should choose, but there it is.

The pros to custom have been discussed at length. I just basically want a nice chip for not too much cash (relatively speaking). Of course, ASMs are only about a buck a piece with inlays and 312 edge spots and that seems to be about the same price as the high end clay (compression molded) chips. The cool factor on customs is way high.

Is there any reason not to go custom other than time and effort?

Re: To Custom or Not To Custom...

Quick list

Custom Pros
===========
Yours and no one elses
Very secure
Exactly want you want (at least at that moment)

Stock Chips Pros
===============
Usually quick turnaround, days/weeks instead of weeks/months
Easily add more chips to the set
Potentially easier to sell if you need to
Available in some styles/types that you can't get custom's in
Generally a bit cheaper than customs

Good luck and get samples of the chips you are interested in first.

Re: To Custom or Not To Custom...

You certainly don’t need custom to get quality. And there is so much available now, you have a huge variety to choose from.

Got to agree with hachkc’s reasons above for customs. I went with Chipco primarily for security, but it’s also nice to get exactly what you want.

Re: To Custom or Not To Custom...

Custom for me no comparison IMO. With suicide Kings or ASM's you get close to the quality of casino chips. With custom ceramic, you get your own and depending on the chip can save 30 cents per....but do what YOU like. That is most important.

Re: To Custom or Not To Custom...

I say get customs.

My first casino quality chips were not customs, and I really regretted not getting my own personalized design.

I ended up getting custom asm and I'm really happy with them:

Re: To Custom or Not To Custom...

Customs for me - Here's why -

This stuff is a sickness - and I have bought, sold, traded, etc....many excellent fantasy chips in the last 2 1/2 years. They were all great chips, but something was always missing - my personal touch.

I bought a custom chipco set about 2 years ago now, been played about 40 times, still look like brand spanking new, and got them because I fell in love with having a full face graphic of my very own design - still love them after 2 years....

HOWEVER, I found that I liked the 'feel' of clay chips much better - just my preference, but I was not totally satisfied with having custom ceramics after I had sold a lot of high end clays just to get them even though all my friends said they liked the ceramics so much they wouldn't want to play with fantasy clays anymore.

Continued buying and selling - - TRKings, Blue chip TILTS, Paulsons(Pharaoh's, JB's, starbursts), bought them all to keep and play, but they weren't 'custom' enough for me, or my buddys who by now had become chip-a-holics themselves.

Now waiting, and waiting, and waiting(haven't been delayed yet but will be due to the fact I am getting close to proposed production time) for my new custom ASM's - ARE THEY HERE YET!!!!!

I think for me, sewing myself into my customs will stop me from buying and selling, it's fun sometimes but I just can't stop......Unless Paulson comes out with a way for me to get my custom inlays on their chips I HOPE I'm done....

Re: To Custom or Not To Custom...

Well, you can certainly get a set of great stock chips that would be all you would ever need and would have a very nice set. I had (well, still do) a set of Blue Chip Casino de Isthmus chips (with new Paulson $1s and $5s) and the guys I played with loved them. They aren't top of the line necessarily, but were nice enough and would have been all I even needed. Then this site was created and now I have a set of custom chipco chips and a set of custom ASMs on the way. Let me tell you that there is nothng like a nice set of custom chips. If you really like poker chips themselves (most people don't seem to really care all that much what kind of chips they are playing with ) then if you have the means, treat yourself to customs. Another piece of advice I would offer is to buy the highest end customs you can afford, even if it means putting off the purchase and sqaving some more money. I put my chipcos off for like seven months so that I could afford chipco. Other manufacturers make nice ceramics, but I figured that if I was going to go to the trouble of having customs done, then I wanted the absolute best. Luckily I had some disposable income and absorbed the extra cost. Good luck with your decision. You are definately in the right place. Oh by the way. . . GET SAMPLES!!!

Speaking of your customs, did you ever post some pics and scans of them in the Custom Chip Gallery?

Not yet, I plan to post both sets when I get my ASM's in - they both use the same middle inlay design and are basically sister sets - so I figured I'd kill two proverbial birds with one stone so to speak.

I look forward to sharing though -

I know - I'm a slacker......

Glad to hear it.

Not posting pictures of custom chips is a banning offense around here if you didn't know.
