They were not broken in - the edges were all very sharp.
My friend got some blank ASMs a couple years ago, and I think if I compare them to what he had, I would guess that they were oiled. The first time we played with the chips I ordered, it left my hands really dry though. I oiled them again by dabbing a bit of mineral oil on a cloth and wiping the chips. They definitely looked different after oiling them, and I didn't use much. To do 1000 chips, the amount of oil I used was not perceptable (i.e., the bottle did not look less full). So I'm guessing they were oiled, but you may or may not want to do it yourself again. I could be wrong though.
But they don't necessarily always oil though, right?
I suspect that the chips I got were oiled by ASM, and that is why they looked better than my friend's chips. But since they oiled only the edges they were still dry. I suspect all the GB chips will be oiled by their method.
You may or may not want to oil them again yourself.
Ditto everything luckychick said, including the dry hands. I don't really have experience with oiling chips. Although mine looked a bit dusty, they were certainly less so than photos I've seen of unoiled new ASMs.
