First chip set : ASM customs

[edit: just realised this thread should have been in the "Gallery" forum...]

Dear Fellow Chiptalkers,

Since you are all pretty much responsible for my getting engrossed in custom chips, I think it is fair that I should submit my first attempt at designing a set on the very forum that got it all started for me.
The inspiration for the colors is the Palmas series, but I use the H-mold instead of the HH. Originally I wanted to go 214 - 314 - 414 - 514 (or in fact ideally 314 - 414 - 514 - 614 with the chips below), but since 514 (or 614) doesn't seem to be available right now , I think it is better to stick to full 414 for coherence's sake. Another reason for this is I'm afraid the 214 doesn't look as good in stacks. Dual edges are nice but they're more difficult to match in a complete set and they are too expensive for my budget.

With the ASM price at 1$ per chip, it keeps the whole budget in the 500$ range, which is the maximum I can afford.

The inlay is my family name and our new house. I am glad it all fits in well with the H-mold .
Since we're renovating the house right now and moving in at the end of the year, I was wondering whether it would be appropriate to add something like "est. 2006" or the name of the town somewhere on the inlay, but I want it to be legible and not too crowded so I don't know. I also mean the chips to be a souvenir for the kids of the place where they grew up.

The fonts are Plantagenet Cherokee regular for the numbers and Copperplate light for the Name (I want the H to look like chimneys).

I don't want any currency because I want the set to remain as versatile as possible, and I live in Europe so dollars wouldn't be really appropriate anyway, and methinks euros wouldn't match with the ASM style.

It would be mainly for family and friendly games, and the occasional 6-8 people tournament. I plan to go with high denominations. The green 25 would be for early level blinds and the workhorse would be the black 100, since my games will have a lot of newbies at first and betting in multiples of 100 is easier. 500 and 2000 are just to accomodate rebuys or the unlikely numerous tournament, but mainly they're meant to look nice in the racks .

200 x 25T [H-mold 414 Green / DG Pink]
200 x 100T [H-mold 414 Black/ DG Orange] {edit : changed that to DG peach on ASM Cathy's advice}
80 x 500T [H-mold 414 Lavender / DG Yellow]
20 x 2000T [H-mold 414 Orange / Blue] {edit : changed that to 100 x NCV - on wijwij's advice}
----
Total 500

Any comment on the chip breakdown, chip style, colors, graphics and fonts, are welcome.

Re: First chip set : ASM customs

Very, very nice - I really like building the family history and nostalgia into the chip design. I would prefer to vary/progress edgespots - but many peoples prefer the cohesiveness you're showing there. That's all about personal preference. I'm not fond of easily had patterns like the 312 and 4d14 - so the 414 is right there for me (I love it) My best wishes go with you on your chips your house your family and your poker games - enjoy!

Re: First chip set : ASM customs

Thanks, man.

I've received an email from PC.com and they say DG orange is actually quite dark and DG Peach would offer better contrast for the black chip. I am also wondering which goes best with Orange as body color: regular blue or imperial blue? Any real life experience with these colour combos - the screen displays can be misleading?

Very nice design. The more I see of he H mold the better I like it. All the colors look great, especially the orange 2000 chip.

I would consider fewer 25 chips. 100 of them would be plenty - that's enough for 12 each to 8 players. Buy more the others and/or maybe add another denomination.

Good luck with your purchase.

Re: First chip set : ASM customs

Great design. I think having something meaningful in terms of your family/heritage on your chips is the key to being happy with them in the long term. Gives them a nice personal touch.

I dig the 414 spots...went that route with mine as well. The only denom I wonder about is the $2000. Why are you going with that rather than a standard $1000? I think the latter would give you more flexability.

I think your quantity breakdown will work fine for 10 or so people. I'd recommend keeping the highter qty of 25s and lowering the 5s if anything. People tend to go heavy on the $5 chip distribution (16-20 seems standard) which is nice in terms of a big chip stack, but it seems like the game is barely getting going and you're coloring up and getting rid of them before you know it. Nice looking chips...looking forward to seeing the real deal when you get them. -mw

Very pretty design. They're certain to become a family heirloom, as I hope mine will be!

Clean & simple. I like those a lot. Understated.

Re: First chip set : ASM customs

Thank you all for the positive feedback. This is really conforting because I am naive enough to believe this will be my first and last poker set, so I want everything perfect.

For the final product I'll have to wait. I'm going to the States on business next October, so I plan to have them ordered in June, and have them delivered at a friend's to save on shipping and tax... So no photos until then.

The 2000 chip I'm not set in terms of denoms. I know the usual route is to go with a 1000 chip, but this is due to reseting the figures to follow with 5k etc. In my case the chip is the upper limit in the set so I thought I'd keep maximum flexibility with a x4 jump from the last one. Plus it puts an original touch to the set. 2500 would be another option, to close the circle with 25.

A 5th denom I'm not sure though, considering I'm only buying 500 pieces. Originally I wanted to buy only three denoms in a 200-200-100 breakdown, because I would like to have no more than 2 colors on the table at the same time, and I gather coloring up twice in a home tournament with 10 people or less is not really necessary. But having a fourth color to give more appeal to the set is nice, and I imagine a 500/2000 setup can be fun for the occasional heads-up.

As for the Red chips I'm cutting them altogether, because I want the black chip to be the main one. I think it makes betting a lot easier. Having to decide on the bet is tough enough, so if you have to make multiplications...

Re: First chip set : ASM customs

I would suggest you leave a denomination off your orange chip, so that you can later decide to use it as 1000, or 2000, or 2500, or even as 5 or 10 for lower games.

If you have a nondenominational chip, you have some more flexibility. So you will want to buy enough so you could use the orange as a small blind or ante chip.

Here is what I'd suggest for a breakdown:

160 chips @ 25 <-- a bit fewer of these, yet still 8 players could get 20 each
160 chips @ 100
80 chips @ 500
100 chips @ [no denomination] <-- enough to use as a small blind chip if desired

500 chips total

[If ASM requires orders in multiples of 25, then other breakdowns would be perhaps 150 G, 200 K, 50 P, 100 O or 150 G, 175 K, 75 P, 100 O.]

You could use the orange/blue ND chip at the bottom of your set as 5 (since it is kind of reddish in color); or as 10 for 10/25 games; or at the top of your set as 1000, 2000, or 2500 units in larger tourneys.

In the space where "2000" currently appears, you could place some kind of ornamental dingbat in the imperial blue color or whatever you choose as your edge spot color for the orange chip.

Will

Re: First chip set : ASM customs

Thanx Will,
Non denom for orange is a brilliant idea. At first I planned on non-denom non-custom 312, but since I'm going all the way to custom, I though denoms would be more fun. The 4th non-denom chip is definately the way to go. Your figures seem good to me and ASM allows any breakdown I think.
