Need opinions on my ideas for custom chips

First post but I have been ease dropping on several threads since I'm in the market for a nice set of chips to upgrade from the crappie ones I currently have. Here is what I came up with after many hours and why, then let me know what you think.

ASM Edge spot from Apache H-mold (in stock ready to go), this is for home use (1) 10 person table ring NLHE .25/.50-1/2 blinds, $25-$200 buy-in respectively and tournies (5 colors) but mosty ring. Want to keep chips in 20 count blocks (for chip racks and case), case will be for 650 chips (10 rows of 60, 3 blocks of 20 for each). Want to use standard $'s for chips at 1/2, White $1, Red $5, etc. and good for at least 3 buy-ins plus for each person. I think with this in mind my chip count below will maximize what I need with out inlays for lower costs for really good chips. Note: @ .50/1 I switched Red and Blue.

White-100 .25 cents, .50, $1
Red- 240 .50 cents, $5, $5
Blue- 160 $1, 1, $10
Green-80 $5, 25, 25
Black- 20 $25, 100, 100

Total 600 chips

Thanks

Re: Need opinions on my ideas for custom chips

You do not need the 0.50 chips, just get more of the $0.25 and $1 chips.

If I was to get a set like yours, my colors would be:

$0.25 - color of your choice (gray or pink for me)
$1 - blue
$5 - red
$25 - green
$100 - black

Re: Need opinions on my ideas for custom chips

Personally I'd do

80 $.25
200 $1
360 $5
640

And then buy as many greens you think you need for rebuys in the 1/2 game.

So I'd start people out with

.25/.50: x8 $.25 + x8 $1 + x1 $5 = $25
1/2: x20 $1 + x36 $5 = $200

I'd play tournaments with starting with 1/2 with T100 in chips or whatever.

Re: Need opinions on my ideas for custom chips

It seems I'm fighting my self on this one. I spent more time with different breakdowns as suggested but even though I won't have any inlays, I want to keep the standard values based on color once I hit a 1/2 game or up to a 5/10 limit. So by scaling down for lower limits, chip stacks of 20/total of 600 to maximize I'm back where I initially started.

Thanks

Re: Need opinions on my ideas for custom chips

To maximize the chips for your situation i'd personally go with 4 colors especially since you're not getting an inlay. If i was in your situation i'd break down 600 chips like this for a cash game:

200x 25c = $50
200x $1 = $200
150x $5 = $750
50x $25 = $1250
Total $2250

That would cover you with breathing room since you said your biggest game would be 10 man at $200 a pop (which is a monstrous home game btw lol). You really just don't need that 5th color IMO. Since there's no denom you can always change the values to match what you need. If you're playing a 5/10 then just change the .25 to a $10 chip.

For a tournament it'd be the same thing, you could just color up as you go. It's the beauty of going w/o an inlay, well if you're trying to stay efficient anyways.

Thanks Mike, you have me thinking about this again which is what I needed. It's been forever since having a 1/2 game (the main game is .25/.50 with a $25 buyin), it really did get out of control but just want the flexibility of using the classic denominations if need be. For some reason I felt compelled to have black chips when I night not need any with there classic denoms. I still want to have 20 blocks equalling 600 so I will use your advice and adjust accordingly and see what I come up with and report back.

Thanks again

OK, I'm going to go with this; (if I like my samples)

White-.25, 200
Blue-$1, 200
Red-$5, 160
Green-$25, 40

I can always get more chips later if need be and a different case.

Re: Need opinions on my ideas for custom chips

Tweaking the numbers again. I'm just going to stick with cash game chips and worry about tourney chips later since I can't get both in one set that I want.

.25 x200
$1.00 x200
5 x120
25 x60
100 x20

This will cover the range from .25/50-1/2 but barely for 10 people. Once I hit 1/2 then the .25 chips are not used but leaves me with more money because of the blacks. So would only use 4 colors in any case but needing the 5th one.

Have you considered....

If you want a Tourney Set and Cash for the same number of chips, I would encourage you to consider dropping the $1 & $5 chip altogether and adding a 500 and 1000 chip instead. If you leave off the $ sign, your chip flexibility goes twice as far.

Here's my reasoning...

For Tourneys, 25,100,500,1000 is a great range for a T1000 or T2000 event.

For Cash; If you're playing .25/.50 and 1/2 then a $100 chip is rarely used, but the trick is that the 25 chip has a dual purpose depending on your stakes- .25 during .25/.50 Games or $25 in $1/2 games. If you change mid-game, simply color off the .25's and make it $25 for when the $100 chips may come into play. (Even in my $1/2 NLHE with multiple re-loads and 9+ guys, the $100 chip isn't needed)

Then the rest of Chip Progession works as follows:

The 500 chip is used for $5 (500 in Tourneys)
The 100 chip is used for $1 (100 in Tourneys)
The 1000 Chip is used for $10 (you get the idea)

So this way....
... You'll need one less color
... You can play Both Tourneys and Cash
... 600 chips would cover a 10 person Cash game and should work up to 24+ for a Tourney (8 25's, 8 100's = T1000 which divides into 220, 27 times)
Here's the 600 Chip setup:

220 25's
220 100's
120 500's
60 1000's

That's...
... $1,475 for a .25/50 game
... $6,920 for a $1/2 game
... T93,500 in Tourney Chips

It's not the perfect set, and I have to admit, that despite my 2500 ChipCo's set up in this exact way; I am now buying a Cash Set. But that's only because I host large Tourneys (24+) and Cash Games break out early, so I needed a Cash set. I've used this config for some time now and it's served me well so I figured I would mention it since it seems to address your Cash/Tourney dilemma

Let me know what you think..
