what prorams can i use to make mock ups

Paint Shop Pro will do the job. I can't speak for everyone here, but I think the majority of us use Photoshop or Illustrator. I'm sure there are some that use Paint Shop as well.

PaintShop Pro will do you well. As a matter of fact one of the label printers, Jason (CinOs3), uses PaintShop Pro and has some references to it in his article about label printing at http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11256 It may give you some guidance in developing your own design as well as set-up parameters if you'll be sending it to one of the label printers for the actual printing.

You can download full versions of illustrator and photoshop from adobe.com that will work for 30days.
