ATTN: Anyone I've helped with design - possibly VERY bad news

Well, from the title, you probably can guess what's coming.

This morning when I went to power up my computer, it made a horrid sound - sort of like the old really loud relay switches that turn signals in old cars used to make. It appears my hard drive (at least one of them, and I'm fearing the primary) has crashed. Complete disk failure on bootup. I haven't taken it apart yet to do any trouble shooting, but I'm preparing for the worst.

If I have been helping you with design work for chips, it is very conceivable that all of my work is lost (I know, I'm a ******* for not having it backed up, but that's neither here nor there at this point).

At any rate, I just wanted to let you know of the problems. I will be working on it this weekend to try and recover the system if possible.

If I am unable to save the work that I've done to this point, I will do my best to replicate it.

I'm still a bit in shock at everything that I'm going to lose on that drive if it's dead.

Feel free to email me at austin5stringATcoxDOTnet if you have any questions or concerns. I can check email thru the web on one of our other computers.

Thanks in advance for understanding.

~John

That sucks. Best thing for a hard drive: Never power it up, never power it down. If you have to do either, do them as infrequently as possible. Best of luck; if the heads have crashed (and that's what it sounds like) then you're probably not going to want to pay for plate recovery.

I have a DVD RW drive and a set of DVDRWs that I keep all of my audio, visual, and sensitive data backed up on. Stuff is so cheap these days it would be a decent idea to consider.

I have an ext HD at home and an identical one at the office and I back up to them and swap them once in a while. I am going to swap again tomorrow.

Good luck a5s.

Re: ATTN: Anyone I've helped with design - possibly VERY bad news

Sucks...same thing happened to me a couple weeks back...luckily i had backups, could have lost 3 years worth of work...

Any way I ran the recovery software from www.binarybiz.com ( I am in no way associated with them!) And was able to recover the files I did not have backed up... It took a long time as my drive was having read errors ( afterwords I read that if this is the case you should copy the drive onto a new one and run the recovery from there)...

Anyway it saved my "ars" a few days of redoing the few files i didnt have backed up...Too bad that Outlook PST files are so flaky otherwise I could have saved my email as well...

Good luck!!!
