I am hoping to get some assistance from all you Illustrator pros out there. I am in the process of learning Illustrator to help in designing a chip for myself. I like the gradient sections on the gold ring that are shown here on this chip

I have not been able to duplicate them. I can use the polar grid to create the pie sections and can paint them with color or gradients with live paint. The colors work fine but when I try to do the gradients they do not line up correctly. Any assitance would be greatly appreciated.

I maybe going about creating the ring wrong in the first place. I create a polar grid with the correct number of pie sections then I just cover it with a smaller circle to make it a ring. If there is a better way I would love to know.

I'm not an Illustrator expert by far. I'm trying to teach myself how to use it too. One thing you could try is to select both the outer circle (with the pie shapes) and the smaller inner circle. Then use the pathfinder palette to subract the inner circle from the circle with the pie shapes. It's a shot in the dark, but it might make just the ring, and thus apply the gradient correctly.

Ok, here's the deal: Be sure you are using a linear gradient when you do
this style. If you did the correct amount of pie's as they have then you
should have twelve, 30 degree's each. For each pie going around clockwise
you will need to add 30+ degrees to the degree box in the gradient options
box. So your first one like mine should be 0, then 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, and last 300.

Thanks I would appreciate it. Like most things in Illustrator/Photoshop they are not difficult once you know how to do it. It just takes finding the right person to show you or tutorial in a book or on the web.

Yeah, something is odd with .ai files and downloading. When you right click your link and save as, it puts a .pdf extension on it. The other day, I tried with another .ai file, and it put a .ps extension on it. Not sure what's up with that. Just change it appropriately with Save As and it seems to work.

That is exactly what I am trying to create. How did you create the ring? I downloaded the file and it is what I want. How did you create the individual arcs. I guess that is my real question.

When I was trying to do it I was creating a grid with the polar grid with 0 concentric circles and 12 radial ones. This sort of worked, it created the pie pieces then I put a smaller circle over it. But was unable to get the gradients.

If you could describe the process of creating the individual arcs I know how to rotate them and duplicate.
