Couple of ASM questions

I'm in the market for a nice chip upgrade and have bought quite a few samples. This includes a 20 ASM chip sample from PCOL. Unfortunately, no horse head molds came with this set (which is what I'm interested in if I decide to go with custom ASM) so I ordered the Rincon's Casino horse heads from HEPC. The very first thing I noticed was that they feel considerably lighter than the samples I got from PCOL, which are mainly the circle square design. I let my brother handle them without saying anything and he happened to make the same observation. So are the horse heads lighter or does it happen to just be these Rincon's (seems unlikely that's the case)? Or maybe it's just me? I don't have a problem with the weight of ASM clays, but I was surprised at how noticeably lighter these Rincon's horse heads were...almost too light.

Overall, I love the look and feel of them. It brings me that much closer to getting a custom set. I noticed the "labels" aren't consistently centered. That's one thing I may be too anal about when I'm looking to spend $1000+ on chips. Anyone have trouble with this? I can't imagine them being perfect for every chip, but I guess it might be something easily overlooked after a while. Anyway, I'd love to hear comments from those that have custom ASM chips.

Is a post by Jim of ASM. To address your question on the inlays.

The blanks that become horseheads or circle square mold should weigh the same - the molds should not affect weight. The colors are going to weigh slightly different amounts.

The Rincon's are older casino chips - correct? And just may be lighter due to when they were made and probably should not be a direct comparison to today's chips.

I have 4 horsehead samples and about 20 circle square and cannot tell the difference by weight.

Matthew

Re: Couple of ASM questions

I weighed my ASM samples. You can see the results here:
http://chiptalk.net/forum/showthread...hip#post164421

The Circle-square chips were a pretty consistent 8.8 grams.
The horsehead ranged from 8.3 grams to 9.3 grams. I was surprised by this , but didn't chase it further to account for the variation. My samples are an assortment of different colors, inlays, and sources.
I had a similar result for the Roman mold samples, which ranged from 8.0 to 9.0 grams.

If you want, I can go through them again and see if I can detect any pattern that corresponds with the weight variation. Or I could just post pics with the weight of the individual chips.

If your chips ended anywhere in this range, I don't think there would be any problem. The only problem might be if different colors of your set had noticeably different weights. That could be a bit disturbing. Has anybody with the big sets of ASMs noticed a difference in the weight of their different colors?

Re: Couple of ASM questions

Yeah, the Rincon's are older casino chips. Maybe someone has a few samples they could weigh compared to current ASMs to see if there's any difference.

Thanks, CaptLego. That is surprising with the range in weight you found. You don't have to go through the trouble of weighing them again, but it's definitely interesting what you posted to find such a fluctuation in weight. Thanks.

Re: Couple of ASM questions

If you ask, I'm sure Cathy from PCOL will send you a couple samples of the HH mold. I got a few samples it was no big deal to them.

Just so you can feel the difference for yourself, if there is a noticable difference.

Re: Couple of ASM questions

well I weighed them and this is what i came up with .

roman mold green/dg peach 8.9
a mold light green.dg peach 8.9
circle square imp blue 9.2
a mold dg orange/imp blue 8.9
hh mold blue/dgpeach with inlay 9.0

I am really confused now i would have thought the chips with the dg colors would be lighter less brass flakes. I guess like jimb said hey are clay custom and will be different

I don't have any, but those Rincon's were made by Langworthy. Different manufacturer = different clay composition = different weight, right? Many of the older chips are lighter too. I have a bunch of Horseheads that were made by pc.com and they are the same weight as other molds.

Re: Couple of ASM questions

I was not aware of that. Maybe it is just the Rincon's that are lighter and not the horse heads. If so, that would be great news to me.
