I am new to this forum, and love it. I have been watching the group buys and ideas thrown about and have developed an intrest in collecting ships. Do most collectors get them as sample sets or just some individual chips.

What is the best way to get started? Any ideas would be welcome.

I think that it depends upon what you plan on collecting. If you plan to collect fantasy chips, then just get a sample set of every set that comes along. Some might go up in value over time.

If, on the other hand, you plan on collecting chips from real casinos then just buy whatever ones you like or pick a specific group of chips that you plan on collecting. For example just collect $5 chips from Las Vegas only or something to this effect. Be warned though, there are a lot of different chips out there and this can be a very expensive/addicting hobby.

I got started by buying a large set of $1 chips from many different real casinos off of e-bay. This will be a bit more expensive than visiting the casinos yourself, but will save you a lot of time.

I guess what holds the attraction for me is the different chips out there, not the actual casino chips but the differnt styles and images. It looks like sample sets are it. With a few casino chips thrown in as well.


Is there a guide to pricing / value / rarity out there?

There is a Chip Collecting Group on the Internet, I don't have the site right now, but find tomb1 here on chiptalk and he can head in the right direction!
