Chips: 5,690 | | | Disappointed in ASM sample weights.... I'm planning on buying my husband some custom chips for his birthday in January, with custom inlays. Thought it would be cool.
I got sample Chipcos, (which arrived very promptly) b/c I had never played with ceramics before. I was pleasantly surprised with their feel, but, my husband is a bit of a traditionalist and I think he would prefer clays - it is what he has always used.
I was pretty sure, given the options available, that I would just order some ASMs, but asked for some samples anyway (which took a LONG time). I got them today. I reached into the envelope, pulled them out and went "Huh?!" The moment I held them I thought "This ain't right - these are WAY too light"
I weighed the two chips I got on two different scales (I work in a lab). Both scales said the same thing: 8.6g and 8.8g (as opposed to 10.6g-10.7g for the Chipcos I weighed).
So my question is - does this seem right? I read gmunny's review of Blue Chips that he got 9.3g for ASMs, which would seem better to me - has the weight possibly changed?
I'm thinking maybe now I should look into T.R. Kings since they might have heavier chips -- I'm going to try get some samples and a quote.

Chips: 200 | | | I have a friend with a custom set of ASMs, and I recently picked up a set of TR Kings.
As you already know, the TR Kings are heavier. And it is noticable.
But once the chips are in play, it's still noticable, but it doesn't seem like a big deal. I enjoyed playing with the ASMs, and it never occurred to me that they were too light.
Now that I have the TR Kings, I'll play around a little with some sample Paulsons that I have, and they seem light. But, after shuffling for a while, I've adjusted to those.
So it may come down to personal preference - but ultimately, once the chips are in play, I don't think weight will be a huge deal. (Now, the difference between like a 7.5 gram chip and 13 gram chip - that would be a big deal!)
There are a LOT of people on this forum with TONS more experience with all sorts of chips - so you're sure to get a lot more in-depth feedback! Good luck! |

Chips: 69 | | | I just got some ASM samples a week or so ago, I compared them to my paulsons and Martini Clubs and they were about in the middle. The horse heads looked nice, but I liked the larger inlay on the A mold, do they do the larger inlay on the HH mold? The ASM's were nice enough, but the weight was a bit light. Depending on your budget Nevada Jacks does custom clays as well, I have (had, son took) some $5,000 NJ clays and they feel heavier than the Martini Club blue chips, they felt closer to the Paulsons in weight than the other two. I may just have some odd chips though, typically bc's are very light.

Chips: 1,071 | | | I have some 14 or so ASM samples. They are light. But I agree with Dubledex, pick up a stack of them and the weight is not really an issue. Once you play with them I am sure it won't be either.
I am a big fan of Chipcos and have a fairly large cash game set, but I want to have some clay chips for a one table tournament set and I have gotten involved in the latest TR King Group buy.
It is all personal choice - ASMs are nice IMO |

Chips: 5,690 | | Thanks for the info so far guys...
I checked out the NJs, but I'm not crazy about the molds. I think I am going to walk around with my two ASMs in my pocket and see if I feel differently at the end of the day.
Re: the inlay size - I think the larger inlay is on the Roman and A only?

Chips: 611 | | For the traditionalist clay poker chip lover, I would think Paulsons are the only way to go.
In my opinion, Paulsons are like the "Mercedes-Benz" of poker chips. All others are like BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, aspiring wannabes...no offense. They all can get the job done during the poker ride, but there is a certain class (sound, weight, feel, style, whatever) that Paulsons exhibit.
I read some post that PalmImports can now do "custom inlays" for Paulson, but some folks might object. http://66.254.97.202/forum/viewtopic...91278c0ba20aba
I own a set of 2005 James Bonds, Chipcos, Trademark, New Sonny's Casinos, and Paulson Vineyards, and lots of sample chips of the other manufacturers (TR King, ASM, Blue Chips, dice, etc). In the end, my friends and I love playing poker with Paulson chips the best.
If you want to get your husband the best (unless he has a particular brand preference) & if cost is NOT an issue, then Paulsons are it!
You should get some Paulson (2005 James Bond, Trademark "Classics", Pharaoh's, or PalmImports customs) samples to see for yourself. |

Chips: 1,700 | | | Paulsons are probably the best (everything is subjective after all) but they are not customizable which may be an issue if this is to be a gift.
ASM are light but they're fine chips. You could try contacting Blue Chip directly but I think you can only get those a hair above 9g on a good day. As mentioned above there's always TR King, who also make fine chips. |

Chips: 8,288 | | | Is it possible they are light because they have no inlays? How much weight do the inlays add? Anyone? |

Chips: 1,728 | | While they are probably the most expensive compression molded chips on the market today, you can get them direct from the manufacturer and not pay a reseller's markup, so you should probably check out the TR King chips as well. If you just need a couple of samples, call them and they'll send them to you. If you want a set of samples, they'll charge you a nominal charge and refund that to you if you place an order with them. Do be aware that they are slightly smaller in diameter than 39mm, and they are just a tad thinner, but they do consistently weigh nominally 10 gr. And they're also the only chip manufacturer where you can basically get the same mold and same chip as the ones that they manufacturer for gaming establishments. Quote: |
