If you were making a custom cash set would you use or prefer the traditional color scheme (the legal scheme for NJ):

White (or Blue) = $1
Pink = $2.50 (if used)
Red = $5
Blue = $10 (if used)
Green = $25
Black = $100
Purple = $500
etc.

or would you go with a completely different palatte?

Personally I like the traditional scheme, I tend to be very conservative with colors and what not, but if you do most folks are familiar with the pattern and inserts aren't as necessary. For a truly custom home set it seems like leaving this set of colors might be interesting and desireable.

I started with non traditional, actually I mixed several traditional colors around....I wish I would have known better!!

Now I use traditional colors until I get to the very high denoms or the very low denoms(.05, .10, .25).

It all really boils down to personal preference, and determining whether or not you care about what other people think. If you don't care then it don't matter!!


Me I care, a little, that's why I use the traditional colors, but I am not afraid to use nontraditional is some instances.

I agree with capt for the most part on this one...But it is personal preference. I tend to stay to the traditional side also...but i will say this. when i first was ready to buy some better chips...i wanted the most different color combos i could get....ive done a complete 180. Now id rather just go with the more of the $5 $25 act....i played at a game few months back where a guy had 7 different color cobmos and it was nuts...keep it simple.

If you play with the same folks all the time and they play most of their games with you, non-traditional colors should be okay as everyone will get used to them. I'd definitely go with denoms though. Are you thinking of using more Oranges, Yellows, Gray and other non-standard colors? I'd avoid using White, Red, Green and Black for different denominations but you could always other colors for these traditional denoms.

i'm big on using standard colors for cash games. tournament games are a different story (though i still use standard for those as well). many of my friends don't have a lot of experience in casino's, but as they get more comfortable playing poker in the home game setting, they will eventually branch out while in vegas, etc. if they get used to blue $1 and red $5 at home, it's easier when they get into a real card room. the whole yellow $5 thing in california throws a bit of a wrench in the mix though, so sometimes we play NL with my vineyards.

So to add another personal preference, I think getting hung up on using standard colors is silly.. As long as the denom is on the chip, there shouldn't really be any confusion.. I don't use my cheapo chips in a standard setup, and I can say with relative confidence that when I'm finally able to afford a good set, I won't be using standard colors..

That's what I think.

Of course, I may change my mind.

My thinking is if I was going to go to the trouble and expense of a complete custom set why use the same colors everyone else has, especially if you're going to have custom inserts made so the values will be apparent. I think it's hard to use traditional colors in a non traditional way sometimes. I know I've played in games where there have been the typical white/red/green/black but the values are all mixed up and it doesn't follow the normal flow (white = 5, black = 25, green = $500 etc). When I see all (most) of the traditional colors gathered I kind of expect the values to follow. The one exception is it's easy to do the big 100 shift, i.e. $25 = .25, $100 = $1, $500 = $5, etc.

I also think it would be hard to use traditional colors in a non traditional way, it can be done, but I would advise against it (just like you stated, Green=$500 (pretty hard to grasp if your used to green=$25)).

Along these lines, if you were going to go non traditional, I would suggest using some pretty crazy colors. Dayglo Colors, Pinks, and then if you went a truly custom route with NJ, or chipco, then I would go totally off the chart- burnt sienna, chartruse, mauv, etc!!

Also, your point, along with others here, is perfect: if your going to put denoms on them, it doesn't matter what color they are. I wish I could have convinced this point to the one group I used to play with- so I was a newb and my first $25 was purple, they had labels, it was easy enough to figure out, but they still didn't like it.

I have non traditional Cash game chips:
.25 = gray
$1 = pink
$5 = imperial blue
$10 = Orange
NCV = Purple (I use it for .50 or $2.50 or $20...depending on the buy-in)

I prefer to have the cash game set not match the tourney color for color.
