Chips: 521 | | | 5 + 5 = 10 and 25 + 25 = 50

Chips: 4,436 | | granted, I'm not the smartest guy out there, but I still don't get this argument. Sure, 5 + 5 = 10, but that still requires using 2 chips instead of one. Where's the pay-off? Quote: |

Chips: 2,121 | | | Nobody is going to color up from $5-$10 unless they're in some funny mental state where racing chips off is more fun than actually playing the game.
The payoff is comparing how many times you'd use a $10 chip compared to just taking the quantity of $10 chips and instead adding those numbers to the $5 chips you'd be making.
Granted, this is tournament poker I'm talking about. If your house is going to be playing dollar for dollar cash games with the maximum bets rarely to exceed $100, a $10 check may be ideal for you. But EVEN THEN I would still consider a $10 a personal choice and not a requirement to get the game going. |

Chips: 4,436 | | | But what about my system where I use $25, $50, $100, $500, $1000 for tournament play?
I color up three times, ending with only $500 and $1000 chips in play. |

Chips: 4,436 | | | It still uses the first two denominations in a 1:2 ratio, but it works great in a tournament.
Do the higher starting values make a difference, or is it still a mistake in your eyes? |

Chips: 14,782 | | | Most step ups in chips are 4 or 5 times the previous value. The only exception seems to be the 500 to 1000 step. This has more to do with blind structures and the resetting of the pattern 1-5-25-100.
Most of the debate seems to center around the 10 chip and the 50 chip.
You don't really need either them for cash or tourney play - just increase the amounts of 5 and 25. It's more efficient form a color up stand point to use the 4-5X rule.
To use a 10 or 50 a logical pattern would be 0.50-2.50-10-50-250-1000, but the 0.25-1-5-25-100-500-1000 seems to be more universal.
What it comes down to is - use the chips that you and the other players are comfortable with.
I personally don't see the need to have a 10 chip when 2-5's will do, what you are saving with efficiency of using one chip instead of 2 in a few situations - you lose on the expense of the extra chips that don't get you much of a step up.

Chips: 4,436 | | | So to follow that structure while keeping most of my values, I would eliminate the $50 and add $5000 to the top end, right? |

I just think the 50 is not very usefull.
