Chips: 164 | | | First post, and whattaya know, a n00b needs help. Not help so much, but your thoughts and opinion.
My littlest sister who I was guardian of for two years is getting married Oct. 7. For her and her husband to be's wedding present, I am getting them a 500-piece custom chip set, as they play several times a week. I obviously should've gotten the ball rolling a LOT sooner, as I'm pretty sure they won't be done in time for the wedding.
I have decided on the clay ones from pc.com, five colors (red, white, blue, green and black). I am getting edge spots, but undecided on what colors as of right now.
So I have some questions. I have emailed pc.com, but I'm assuming they're closed on the weekends, and I'm impatient, so I'm hoping some of you can help.
I plan on having the same design on the back of all the chips and a different design for the front of each color. Does it cost more to do it like this as opposed to the same design front and back on all 500?
Here's what the back of all of them will look like. Please, critique the hell out of it.
For the front, I plan on going with a wedding vow themes "to have and to hold", "for better or worse", "for richer or poorer", "in sickness and health" and "til death do us part"
Thoughts on the overall suckiness of the front theme?
Thanks in advance. Found the site yesterday and spent about four to five hours on it, registered today and have spent three hours on here today. |

Chips: 17,158 | | | i know it's a wedding present...but this theme is just not going to be good. as your lawyer, i advise that you go with a theme that is a little less timely.
also, if you buy ceramic chips from NJ (which are of very high quality) you'll have them in time. i'm not positive, but it's possible that chipcos from homepokerchips.com would be done by then as well.
good luck. |

good luck. | They really like the clay. My personal set is still up in the air and I will take a lot of time on them, since I just found this forum.
What do you think about this? Instead of making it serious on the front, but keeping in theme with the wedding....
"to have and to fold", "for better or bluff", "for richer or short stacked", and "til river do us part"
Don't have the "in sickness and health" one figured out yet. |

as far as the theme, you're really not selling me on it. i think it might be amusing...but the set should be one that they'll want to play with for the next 20 years. what you're describing seems like it'll be cute for the first month or so, and then just kinda... |

Don't have the "in sickness and health" one figured out yet. | I like the idea though the mock is a little hokey for me but the idea is awesome and it might be them. As far as changing the sayings, the only one that sounds right to me is "for richer or short stacked" the others don't work for me e.g. hold to fold... not the same conotation, too many rivers to part ways after that etc... I didn't think the sayings as is were bad. Could always just incorparate the date into a design. I would have loved chips as a present whatever the design but I think 2 years later and to pass on I might prefer something else like some design with our intials or some other personaliztion... if I come up with any ideas I'll let you know.
In regards to the design, it looks like a good start but I might choose better images for the rings and bells. Also, the font's not wraping well... could be that it's italicized?? The heart in the middle looks good... maybe check it out with stroked in a very dark pink.
What program are you using for the mock ups?
Good luck & keep us posted.

Now I need a new idea. |

BTW, I like the "to have and to fold" but hey, that's just me. |

Good luck & keep us posted. | Thanks! I am using photoshop. I have some knowledge of it, as I am news editor at a newspaper. I'll go over the heart with a dark border and see what it looks like.
I went ahead and put the middle on a red chip (in photoshop) so I can get an idea of what it looks like.
The rings and bells both make the design pretty busy. I'm anal about symmetry, which is why I put something on each side.
And the images look bad because I did this in a 72 dpi image. I thought I was in 600. It won't be a big deal to go back and get the images looking right. |

Chips: 18,645 | | | I have a thought about this that you may not like, but here goes.
I always thought that a wedding present should not be about the wedding (just one day) but about the couple and their future together. Everyone is so caught up in planning the wedding that they forget about the day(s) after.
So I would not give them chips that will last lifetime with labels about one big day. That's like giving them a 10-year supply of the printed napkins they'll use at the wedding reception.
I prefer to give something classic & timeless, something that will mean more each year.
Now you could still make it personal, maybe just put their last name and the wedding date, but some classic images not wedding bells & hearts. And if you put "The Guerins" but leave off Michael & Jennifer, then they can give them to their kids at some point.
Just my 2¢.... |

Chips: 9,300 | | I agree with a lot of what has been said. I would make the chips about them and not about their wedding.
Maybe a big G as the center graphic (see this thread http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2788 amd http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2049).
Guerino's Card Room. With or without their first names. Probably "est. Oct 7, 2005"
I would go with non-denominated chips unless you are fairly certain what they would want, and probably only four colors with a 500 chip set (you could even go three).

PS for people who play a fair amount of poker, I think these would make an awesome gift. They would think kindly of you several times a week. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
