First attempt -- color/edgespot thoughts?
So I am considering doing some custom ASMs -- I'm heavily inspired by the Protege line at Sidepot. These will be labeled, but I have not started on the design yet.
I like the deep colors, but am struggling how to keep the edgespots varied enough. I feel like I am relying a bit too much on the red, but not sure what to replace it with.
Any thoughts?

I think the white red and yellow look fine, but the black and dark green are too similar in shade and will get confused. They even have similar edgespot colors.

I take it that you've decided not to use the Protege spots and colors because you prefer deeper colors.
There are so many color and spot options available. My suggestion is that you cruise through the custom chip gallery and make a list of the color combinations that appeal to you the most.
Most important, IMO, is to get a color sample set. As accurate as the CF may be, real chips aren't backlit. Sit with them at your poker table, in the lighting that will be used when they're in play, and try all sorts of color combinations. Many won't work, but when you find just the right combinations, you'll know it immediately.
Have fun! The process of creating a custom set is exciting -- there is nothing quite like it.

Re: First attempt -- color/edgespot thoughts?
Thanks. I have a ton of non-custom samples on my desk -- the Protege's clearly, a bunch of ceramics, some desert palms, etc. ASM sample sets on order from PCOL.
Yes, I like the deep colors of the Proteges, and the white and red chips are basically copies, but they got a little to pastel-y with the edge spots in some of the higher denominations, which I tried to stay away from. I like the black one in this one better, but still struggling with the green. I'm almost wondering if i should go with something other than the dark green for the base.

I agree that the dark green chip is a problem. As Sweet said, it would be easily confused with the black chip because it is so dark. For that reason I wouldn't go with dark or retro blue, maroon, or chocolate. If you want that chip to be green you might consider light green. Other colors that might work, aren't pastel, and won't be as likely to be confused with black include lavender and Imperial blue.

Hrmm, I'm sort of digging an Imperial blue base. Not sure on the edge spots though.

Much prefer this last mock up, I would wait till you get the ASM samples before you make your mind up completely (like I'm doing at the moment)

I like the chips individually but as a set red/white features strongly in the first 2 and then black in the last 3.
