Golden Lion Tourney Set *PICS*

I started planning this set last May, and it's still not completely finished. But I will post a few pictures and discuss the set now anyway since there seems to be interest for it. I'll add new pictures once the whole ~1100 piece set is done. Development thread: http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/custom...me-decide.html

Originally I wanted a budget MTT set, and prior to this my only poker chips had been 200 dice chips. After looking around I decided on the Super Diamonds with labels, even though I was aware these chips have no recess. The whole budget thing sort of went out the window a few weeks later, when I felt it necessary to have a deep stack MTT set with plaques... I was able to cut down on the cost of custom plaques by coming up with a way to make my own, more on that in a bit.

The chips are not the 'better kind' of Super Diamonds, but I think they are still good for the money. I bought them from Discount Casino Gear, and originally my green ones were the 'better kind', so I had to get new ones that matched the rest of the set (problem #1). Hog Wild made the labels on his 2 mil vinyl, but unfortunately this happened when he was experiencing trouble with his printer and most of the labels didn't come out right. So he had to redo them, and I finally received proper labels many weeks later (problem #2). Turned out that even with the 2 mil labels, the Super Diamonds not having a recess is an issue. The labels of course affect stacking, but the bigger problem was that they stuck together, and this seemed to increase with added heat/humidity (problem #3). I have managed to solve this by spraying labeled chips first with hairspray and then with a fabric protector, giving them a nice, almost teflon-like coating. After the coating and some use, the labels don't seem to stick to each other anymore. I must admit I was almost ready to give up on this set due to the obstacles I encountered, but now I'm glad I didn't.

The plaques are not solid pieces of plastic, but so far everyone who has handled them thought they were. They are actually made from credit card sized plastic cards, which I have glued together. The top cards have obviously been printed on. Because of this layered design, I was able to implement edgespots for the plaques, so people can tell them apart when they are stacked. Another option would have been to use different colored plastic cards, but I found black & white edges to be more classy. I think the plaques ended up costing me $2-$3 each, which isn't too bad I guess. They are pretty sweet. No issues with the plaques, except it's a pain to glue 340 plastic cards together nicely.

Even though I've had plenty of work putting this set together and I never use it at home due to my Samurai Palace chips, it is wonderful for MTTs. Plastic chips are perfect for hard tables and players who fumble their chips, and some stacked plaques add a ton of class to the final table. I'm adding custom dealer buttons (by Palm Imports) to the set, I guess the only thing left then would be custom playing cards...

----------

Edit 1

Here are some close-ups of the plaques. The art looks a bit grainy, but you wouldn't be able to see that with the naked eye. The surface tends to show fingerprints, like on the 25k plaque. The slight smudging on a few of the 5k plaque-edges is caused by some of the glue escaping from between the cards. That stack of 25k plaques looks suhweet, makes me wish I was the chipleader...

Very impressive DIY on the plaques. They look as good as anything you could buy, and a fraction of the price. You should be proud of your ingenuity. Well done! Now what type of stock and printer are you using to get such a clean and crisp image? And how heavy are they?

Very nice. By plastic cards, are you talking about ID cards?

Thanks guys! I guess you could call them ID cards... You can find many vendors online that print on credit card sized plastic cards. I had them done in a local shop here since they didn't have a minimum order. They have actual printers designed for printing these cards. I think they use a sublimation technique similar to photo printers, but I could be mistaken. I don't have a scale to weigh the plaques with, but I'd estimate they weigh around 25 grams each (I used five cards per plaque).

Re: Golden Lion Tourney Set *PICS*

This set really looks outstanding. As I mentioned in your other post, I am trying to make a cheap set for my father. I have some questions if you do not mind answering:

Labels:
- How much is the cost for labels?
- Any suggestions on a brand of hair spray and fabric protector to use?

Plaques:
- Where did you purchase the cards for the plaques?
- How did you print on the cards?
- How many cards are in each plaque?
- How did you glue them and what kind of glue?

I am sure others here want to know more about the plaques as well. You realy did an outstanding job with these. I know Super Diamonds are cheap. I am hoping it does not cost more to label them, than the acutal chips.

Great job!

Edit: You answered some of these questions when I was replying.

Do you have a link to where we could get these from? +

BTW. Sweet setup...

Re: Golden Lion Tourney Set *PICS*

Hokie-NC, unfortunately the labels do cost more than the chips, around $0.06 per label I think. You should check the exact pricing from Hog Wild.

As for hairspray or fabric protector brands, I don't really have any idea. But I did use "ultra strong hold" hairspray for a hard finish.

I would recommend getting the printed cards from a local shop if possible, and having them print some samples first. However, here is an online vendor I considered before going local: Pricing - Duracard® Plastic Card Printing

I got my blank 'filler' cards from here: Generic CR80Color Color PVC Cards

Getting the kind of glue that 'melts' the plastic cards together might be essential. I used Loctite Super Attack Brush-on universal glue.

I can't tell by the picture. What color cards did you use? You said that the top card is the one with the Printing on it. Would it be possible to place a clear card over this card to protect the top card from scratching? Or is this unnecessary and not able to be done because of the glueing process? Great stuff!

All the printed cards are white (the print colors would change if the card itself is colored), and then I used white and black blanks to build the plaques. A clear card on top wouldn't work because the cards melt slightly during the glueing, so that would ruin the design. Granted, the plaques have been used in only a few games so far, but I'm not worried about the design wearing off.

I like the label design; they look good on the Super Diamonds ... and the plaques you made look fantastic!

I've always wanted to make my own plaques, but didn't really know how to go about it ...
I'm going to look into making my own too. Thanks.
