There is an easy reason for this. Your eyes (and brain) are used to seeing light coming from above, creating a shadow below. In the photo, the shading of the 25/100/500 chips have cubes with the lighter panels above and the more shaded panels below...very natural for your perception of 3D objects. The other three that seem strange are opposite, with the shading above giving the illusion that the light source is from below. If those chips were rotated so they all had the light panels above, it would all look correct, but only if they ALL are the same way. Having different sources of light within the same photo is quite confusing. Is this at all clear, or did I make a mess of the explanation?
Good explaination. I knew it was a light thing but even when I rotated the image on the monitor I still couldn't "see" it. I think you're right that the problem was that they would ALL have to be rotated the same way. Still frustrating that I couldn't "trick" my brain. I'm either too smart for myself or too dumb
