Beginner questions

Just starting to get into chip collecting and new to this forum and I have a few questions.

1. I didn't see any FAQ on the site (outside of the bulletin board FAQ). In particular is there any place where common abbreviations are listed? i.e I know that WTT = Want to trade, WTB = want to buy, WTS = want to sell, but what is NVC, etc. There are many I don't know.

2. If I wish to trade chips with someone is it pretty safe to just assume that we're both shipping accordingly? I know there aren't guarantees but is scamming a common problem?

3. How are the quality of some of the collector's books? i.e. Chip Rack etc.

Any other helpful hints from people are appreciated.

Re: Beginner questions

NCV is No Cash Value - a non denominated chip that will say NCV. they are versatile in that you can use them for an extra denom lower or higher than the denominated chips you already have in your set. or use them for bounty or show 'em or rebuy or rabbit hunting.

Re: Beginner questions

I'll address your trading question. Generally members here are really good to deal with. I try to deal with active members with high post counts if possible.

There are always risks. If you look in the group buy forums, one of the more trusted regs on the site has disappeared with a bunch of people's chips. It is mildly irritating to say the least.

Also, JM posted a link to the glossary post yesterday that has definitiOns to all the common acronyms and terms.

Re: Beginner questions

Here's the link to the glossary: Linky

Although its location isn't obvious to new members, it's easy to find if one searches for the term glossary.

The CC&GTCC is a club that focuses on collectors of individual chips. Linky

If you're interested in joining the CC&GTCC, check out this page here on ChipTalk.

Most CC&GTCC members, as well as non-member collectors, hang out at TheChipBoard. This group prefers that posters use their real names. Introduce yourself as a new collector.
