I'm torn on payout structures. When I win, I like to have a nice payday for that effort. At the same time, it's nice to massage a short stack into the money and do better than just getting my buy-in back.

In my home game, I like to pay deeper working on the thought that more winners means more people keep coming back. I'm probably real close to a SNG structure where almost 30% of the field cashes. Seems like most big tournaments like the WSOP and others pay out somewhere around 10% of the field.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa hold on. Hold on. Okay, you don't care about the money. Okay. Let's let that sink in. The money is not the reason you play. Okay, I think I've got it. You care so little about the money, you are just as happy to have it be a fake money tourney. Check, this all makes sense. You feel strongly that only the top three places should be paid. <sound of brain exploding> So you don't care about the money, but you feel strongly that only three people should win any money?

Heh, I just sort of wanted to type out the thought process that I was going through. :-P But really, listening to your arguments it sounds to me like you actually prefer paying out more places. So if you don't care, then you don't care. If you think only three should be paid, then you do care.

If you're right, good point. Did anyone look it up?

Yikes. That doesn't sound like someone who doesn't care about the money.

If it's a friendly game, then the money is not important.

If the money is not important, then you want the most people (within reason) to leave the table happy.

If you want the most people to leave the table happy, you pay out more places (within reason).

Did I miss anything, or did what I just wrote make pretty good sense?

Hell, my point is that even though I don't care so much that I won't play if it's only top 3 (I do prefer paying more spots) but your reasoning just didn't make sense. Anyways, tonight will be the first one I play in (since this is the first time I stumbled into this part of the forum) and I expect not to get top 5 either way, so enjoy my money!

Welcome to the forums vanquish, and welcome to the Chiptalk tournaments. Let me make this as clear as possible.

This thread was started because someone wanted to change the current structure (or move to a different site) because they felt it wasn't advantageous to play if the payout structure was so limited.

I "feel so strongly" about the current structure, because I don't think there is a need to move to a different site (which is the only option, based on Stars' rules for private tournaments). Everyone is happy with Stars.

Sheesh, it's a highlight of my Thursday night, because I get to play against people I chat with all week on Chiptalk.net, not because I could win some cash, which I think is pretty obvious from my post. I guess you just missed that...

Good luck tonight, and have fun - that's why we're here.

You will never hear me say "moneys not important." With that being said, there's more to the this tourny than money. If it was just about the money I'm sure I could find a weaker game than one that only consists of guys that obsess over chips, cards, and poker.

I would like to see more places paid in a 20-30 person tourney, maybe 5 places...

FYI I played in a private tourney on UltimateBet a few weeks ago. There were six player and it paid 5 places, so I guess their private tourneys pay a min. of 5 places. I would prefer to play on PokerStars but I thought I would let you know about UltimateBet.
