Chips: 17,154 | | | ChipTalk Side Tourney 11/6/06 - a new direction? these tournies were started to run different games, and to get the guys together on a night that wasn't thursday. in the beginning it worked, and we consistently got 10-15 together for non-nlhe tournies.
but then things changed. in the last 10 weeks or so the fields have been small. dunno why, but we really want to get people together to have fun in a less intense atmosphere than on thursdays.
so we're trying NLHE for a few weeks. hopefully we can get bigger fields that way, b/c people know the game better. and we'll try different sorts of things to liven up the experience. sidebets? goofy prizes and bounties? dunno, but go ahead and post your ideas here.
and sign up and play, dammit! Game info for 11/6/06:
Where: PokerStars
Time: 9:15pm (est)
Buy-in: $10+1
Game Name: Chiptalk Monday funtime
Password: ct rocks
Game: NLHE
Good Luck! |

- if even money doesn't do it for you, i can consider laying odds, if you flatter me
- as a bounty on an opponent of my choice (let's see who plays) i'll offer a 6 month loan of the poker book of your choice (yes, i own that one)

I'm starting to hit a schedule of tournaments now with the $11 19:45EST tournament every night on 'stars, it fits well with my schedule. Last month and before, I was not tied to any schedule and the CT tournaments just kinda got left behind. The alternates have always been a lark for me, I don't know any games other than NLHE well enough to be +EV, IMO.
Embarassingly, the 19:30MST start of the CT tournament might put a little cramp in my style (that damn 04:00 MST wakeup) but I think I'll try the thursday this week and see if I'm not completely wiped by the time I bust out. Two NLHE tournaments a week with "the crew" might be just what the doctor ordered.
edit: haha, duh... tonight is sunday. side tourns. are monday. forgot that little bit
perhaps I'll join ya tomorrow night.
edited for ******* time-change-in-the-head that JM pointed out

I agree the side game concept hasn't really taken off (ok its a bust) but I believe the original intent was to open it up to more games other than just NLHE. It might have worked out better if P* offered cheaper buyins than $10 which may be "sizeable" investment for some folks if they don't know the game.
IMHO, another NLHE tourney isn't overly exciting or thrilling and the bounties, sidebets and other gimmicks have always been present in the regular Thursday night game.
This may be a bit of threadjack but I've been tossing this idea around so I'll throw it out here and it is somewhat related to the OP.
What about hosting something like a CT Poker Decathalon?
Each week or every other week we host a side tourney of a specific game type (PLO, 7CS, LHE, etc). The week prior to the game we start a thread discussing basic strategy of the specific game (aka training) and maybe some hand examples and such. Basically, it would be more formalized version of the CT side games.
You would accrue points like the regular CT event and at the end, we'd have an overall poker champion(s) declared. If everyone chipped in $5 at the beginning, we'd have an prize to provide to these champions (gold, silver, bronze).
Any thoughts? |

Mondays and Thursdays are my home games.......
I think the 'other games' idea is a great one , though....

I go play at the casino on Monday nights. The football splash pot promotions draw alot of players so the games are pretty good.

Any thoughts? | my thoughts: i'd like it, as would the other guys that already play on mondays. but a couple of things: formalized discussion hasn't worked well here (see bolgenmod's book discussion this summer). so as far as people learning the game in a thread, i doubt it. also, making the tournies MORE competetive (with the leaderboard) seems like more the same of what we have (thurs. night seriousness).
all that being said...i am game, and love tracking results and so forth. i nominate you to organize. | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
