What is this button used for?

In my set of chipcos I just received, Dave threw in a bunch of goodies for me! Two things I have never seen before were a KIll/No Kill button and a 1/2 Kill/Kill Button.

I have seen it mentioned here on some CT discussions, but I am completely ignorant as to what these are used for...

Re: What is this button used for?

Some casinos and a couple online poker rooms (like UltimateBet) have kill games.

Basically when someone wins 2 pots in a row, they get the kill button and they have to post a double blind. The stakes then double for the next hand and stay double until the person with the kill button loses. So 4/8 game would become an 8/16 game for that hand. The blinds stay the same though.

A 1/2 kill would instead of doubling to 8/16 (a full kill), 4/8 would become 6/12 (half kill).

When the stakes are normal you have the no kill side showing.

Hope that made sense

to promote action, casinos sometimes run a "kill" game

the Mirage has a 5/10 O8 game with a full kill (I am drooling just thinking about it)

the game is a normal 5/10 limit until someone wins a big pot (at Mirage, a scoop of over ~ 70 meant a kill). The winner of the pot posts the kill - or a double blind ($10 in a 5/10 limit game). The next hand is then played as 10/20. The kill button goes in front of the player who scooped to indicate that they need to post. The 1/2 kill is similar, but the hand does not double (they only post an additional BB and the limit does not go up). I would assume that the no-kill button is used to indicate that no additional posting is needed.

Re: What is this button used for?

Just as an example:

Oh and this is for limit hold'em
4/8 game with 2/4 blinds, someone wins 2 pots in a row.

stakes are now 8/16
SB posts $2
BB posts $4
Kill button posts $8.

1/2 kill stakes are 6/12
SB posts $2
BB posts $4
Kill button posts $6

Re: What is this button used for?

Before I started playing NL Holdem, one of my favorite games in vegas was at Sams Town -- 4/8 7 stud with a 6/12 kill. Getting a hold of that kill button and holding onto it for a while pumps up the action. It almost works like a bounty. People start gunning for you.

so to stay in the game, do the players have to at least call the "kill" post?

Re: What is this button used for?

In Brooklyn theyre used somewhat differently. When one player has been a real pain the entire night- he is given the KILL buton. He is then given an informal verbal attitude adjustment. If his attitude improves he gets a NO KILL button. If his attitude does NOT improve- he keeps the KILL button and after the game ends, he is taken to New Jersey out in the marsh fields and... well, lets just say there will be a vacant seat available at the next game.

Sometimes a player may have seen too much on his way to the game- that player is usually given the LITTLE blind or- depending on exactly WHAT he has seen- the BIG blind button.

You know the rest.

Re: What is this button used for?

Some casinos also set the kill according to the size of the last pot. At Foxwoods for example, the 5/10 game goes to a kill pot if the pot reaches $95. It then becomes 10/20..which often stays there for a while because it is quite easy to reach $95 in a 10/20 game. Usually goes back down when someone steals the blinds. The kill is only in effect in a designated kill game (so not all 5/10 tables at foxwoods are kills).

Re: What is this button used for?

So I pull a $100 pot and the kill goes on me... and the next pot is over $100 but someone else pulls it... the kill moves to the new winner? And continues if a.) he wins again (even if less than $95) or b.) someone else rakes a $95+ pot (in which case they assume the kill)?

Yes. That essentially is the new big blind for the round. The BB no longer will have an option to see a free flop during these rounds. They will have to call the remainging size of the kill post to play.

Not exactly.

Basically, you start with the kill button on no one.

When someone wins one pot, the kill button is placed in front of them with the "no kill" showing just signifying that they have won one hand.

If they win a second pot in a row (usually the second pot has to be at least greater than one big bet without the blinds counted), then you flip over the button and show that the next hand is a kill hand.

You play out this hand as a kill pot. If that same player wins again, the next hand plays out the same way, and continues to do so until someone else wins a pot. Once someone else wins a pot, there is no more kill hand until that player or someone else wins 2 hands in a row.

So-
hand 1:
Player A wins pot and now has "no kill" showing in front of him. (This signifies that he has won one pot, but not yet 2)

hand 2:
Player A wins next pot and now has "Kill" showing in front of him and stakes are doubled.

hand 3:
Player B wins next pot and now has "no kill" showing in front of him

hand 4:
Players A and B split the next pot, now the "no kill" button goes back to the dealer as no one player won the pot.
