Re: Harrahs metal chips?

These are a line of chips known as brass core. The manufacture process is very interesting for these types of chips and they were used in a lot of places. Here is the pictures I think we are talking about.

Like all things the value is based on condition and rarity. In this case they are not very rare. $3-4 a peice for the $1 from Harveys, less from Harrahs as they are very common. Some of the other denoms from this and other casinos are higher.

Re: Harrahs metal chips?

Just as Ross indicates, this style of manufacture is commonly called "brass core". However, a more technical term is PMSC, or Plastic Molded Slug Core. The Harrah's $1 chips were used until very recently and are quire common and rather beat up.

These chips are very heavy and take a toll on the felts and are very heavy for cage personnel to move racks around and security to pull drop boxes. Within the collecting community there have also been some issues with these chips as some have been repaired or the plastic removed and recast in a different color and presented as real to collectors.

Greater details are available in the Archives of TheChipBoard and the CC&GTCC message board... Search "brass core".
