Have you cleaned them yet?
If yes, with what? If no, Try the diamond chip cleaner found at
www.thechiproom.com I have not tried either of the two methods you mention, but I have used the diamond chip cleaner with excellent success. It works like a charm. If you do a search you will find many threads on the topic. I diluted it a bit to stretch it out and I was able to do 1000 chips with only about 1/2 of one of the big bottles. I did run it through a coffee filter into a cup a few times when it started to look really gunky.
I have also found that it does help to oil the chips after any sort of cleaning. Just go to the drug store and get the smallest bottle of mineral oil. A little goes a long way. Oiling can be done very quickly. I can oil 100 chips in probably 10 or 15 min. There is no need to submerse them or make any sort of big mess about it all. You can just put a couple of drops on your fingers and rub the chip a bit. You can also put some on a towel and wipe them. I usually do the faces of the chips 1st individually and then do about 10 at a time stacked for the rolling edges. You can set them out to dry or not. Both ways work. Depending upon how much you use, you may have to wipe them off and possibly have to set them out to dry. Experiment a little.
