Chips: 349 | | | Ratings, what do they mean? My question is simple. What is the difference between an R1 rating and any other non R rated chip. HA! I don't mean movie ratings.
Thanks |

I think what you are referring to is the rarity rating that is quoted per the Campiglia & Wells price guide. In the price guide R1 indicates the chips is pretty common (a lot of chips in circulation) and goes up to R-9 or R-10 (I don't have my guide at work), which indicates a very rare chip. In the guide, there are estimated circulation numbers associated with each rating #.
Obviously with collecting anything, usually the rarer the item, the higher the market value or potential appreciation. I say usually, because market demand is the overall indicator, meaning you can have a rare chip, but if no one wants it, the market value is still low.
Hope this answers your question.

Very good information. However, for accuracy, the "R" scale was described earlier (and perhaps developed) by Howard "Howdy" Herz in his "A Collector's Guide to Nevada Gaming Chips & Checks" (1995). (Howdy co-authored that book with his wife Kregg.)

I'm at a loss for your comment.
I mentioned Howdy's wife because she was/is very instrumental in the things that Howdy has done in documenting and other historical actions regarding Nevada chips and checks.
Years before the CC>CC, Howdy was a pioneer in preserving historical data on chips and checks of Nevada. He did so with the assistance of his wife (Kregg) in his job with Harvey Gross of Harvey's casino, Lake Tahoe, which included travelling the State of Nevada to record and document all casino chips and checks at that time.
Both Howdy and Kregg are rather unique in this hobby, as there are very few husaband and wife teams with the same collecitibles interests.

Gmunny | I understand that part, I'm asking what is the difference between chips with an R1 rating and ones that have no rating at all? For example are dice composite chips labeled an R1 rating or not? That is what I'm asking.
Thanks |

Jim | Thanks for the correction, Jim! I guess it is the standard scale among chip collectors. |

Thanks | I'm pretty sure the rating/scale only applies to actual casino chips, so I don't think they apply to like dice chips or even fantasy chips like the Pharoahs. I'd defer to Jim for the correct answer. |

Chips: 10,807 | | | Re: Ratings, what do they mean? Well, lets try this.....
The Rarity system is not really a standard within collecting circles and in fact, there are many collectors that feel that the Rarity system is bogus. Since many manufacturers and casinos prefer to not publish quantity information, without that specific information, it could be any ones guess as to how chips may have been made and how many are remaining in existence.
Next, I am only aware of the Rarity system being used by the two publications noted previuosly. The Herz/Herz Guide only applies to Nevada, therefore all non-Nevada issued, non-casino chips would be without an "R" designation.
The Campiglia/Wells publication is Nevada (but not all Nevada chips are included), Colorado, South Dakota, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Jersey, and the same can be said about R designations for those locations.
Bottom line, only these authors are know to use the R system.
Does this answer your question? If not, LMK and I'll try a different way.
