Okay, here are my latest thoughts on adding chips to the line.
The easiest thing to do is add an NCV chip (or two, or three); because the inlay is not color-coordinated to the chip base or spots (and assuming we just wanted to keep the tri-point inlay shape and edge-spot pattern), it would just be a matter of using the same production process and swapping out colors.
My first choice would be to go with a Hopin2Steal's original entry, the Dark Blue base with Horizon Blue and Sky Blue edge spots (but in the 3 1/2 with 1/8 edge spot pattern to coordinate with the inlay). I just think that if we're going to add a chip to the set, we should have a dark blue one in there somewhere.
As for adding additional
demoninated chips to the set, we run into the problem of repeating inlay shapes somewhere. My initial proposal (duplicating the chips from the InPlay set that weren't part of the Protégé line) works for the 50˘ and $2 (in that we can readily stick with simple round inlays for those low-value chips and still be consistent), but we don't have any viable options for the $10 (which -- since we start shaped inlays with the $5 -- would have to have a shape as well). And if we want to add a $25,000, we also have the repeated-inlay-shape problem,
plus the difficulty of fitting the text into the available space.
So here's my proposal -- we add a 50˘ and a $2 (just because they're relatively painless) and say
two additional NCV chips. (I'm thinking maybe one with a Coral base, since it's the least garish of the pink hues, with White and Plum edge spots, based on Johnny5's NCV design); I like the almond, but the inlay tends to get lost.) If, at some point in the future, we gain an additional (viable) shape -- say, the sawtooth -- then we add a $10 chip.
With all that in mind, here are my proposed additions to the set. I used a gray base for the 50˘ chip (to suggest the "coin" nature of the denomination), and went with Mustard for the $2, keeping the edge spot patterns both simple
and in keeping with the overall set progression. Reactions?
