I had planned my yearly "Chuck's Big Game" for the end of October. Well 3 weeks into October and no Proteges. Luckily my good buddy and teammate ddollevoet shipped me 1000 Pharaoh's to borrow for the weekend. Since then I have been putting off other games, like the game I was hoping to have this weekend when all my buddies are in town for the holidays. I also decided not to to buy any of the Paulson Top Hat chips or the Paulson Hot Stamps because I was sure the Proteges would be here...

I understand the delays Sidepot is having and know that they are out of his control, but it is still very disappointing...

Chuck
I've been in the same boat as well. Sold my tournament set (Mardi Gras clays) and during this long wait ended up buying a set of Faux Clays as a "temporary/travel set." Funny thing is I've never got to use the Faux Clays as Warewulf has been playing in my home game and bringing over his custom ASMs and custom TR Kings (much to my delight).

What has eased the pain considerably is that I just received a tournament set of the new Paulson Hotstamps (purchased at the presale price), and I have to say they have exceeded my expectations in every possible way. They are just SOOOOOOOOOOO incredibly nice in every way that I suspect they are going to be my favorite set, and I'm already thinking of adding to them (even though I don't "need" additional chips). It's hard for me to conceive that the Proteges will be able to "wow" me to the same degree, but I can't wait to find out.

Bottom line: this long wait is a tremendous drag, and, though it is nice of Stephan to update us, there is no way to know for certain if we will have them in January.

And I'll start breaking out the artwork; it's all done in Illustrator, so it's not too tough to add additional denoms. Well, other than coming up with the actual chip colors and edgespot patterns. And inlay shapes. And side ornaments.

Okay, so maybe it's a bit tougher than I thought. But definitely doable.

Maybe replicating the InPlay denominations that weren't included in the Protégé line?

(And incidentally, in this whole process, I did detailed color sampling of the entire set of available chip colors -- not just the ones we ended up using -- so I should be able to match colors pretty well without having to get additional samples. Which'll save a bit of time.)

Any possibility of getting the Sidepot Chip Tool back up and running to play around with?

One little wrinkle -- given the number of numeric digits in "$25,000" (not to mention the words "Twenty-Five Thousand"), the inlay design may suffer a bit. After all, it was designed to work best for the denominations we had specified, and I'd have to shrink and/or compress the text a bit for it to fit. Not a deal-breaker, but just something to consider.

Nothing more than talk. Well, and that rendering I did. The thing about plaques is that they'd be a whole new production process. I've got artwork -- I had to do it to create the rendering -- but Sidepot (or someone here with a little more specialized knowledge) would have to do all the research and prep work to get them made. Adding new chips to the line would probably be less of a hassle.

That said, I'd love to see plaques as well. It would solve that text size problem...

I'm not big on plaques. But I think for this set they would be pretty cool.
What about a second NV chip? Hmmmm. That would give lots of extra flexability to the overall set and give an option to those who want a non-denominated 2 color set.

Actually, I like that idea a lot. (And not just because it would save me a lot of work -- and therefore time.) We could use the same inlay as the current NCV chip and just change the chip and edge spot colors, and we'd be good to go.

Seconded! How about we use a runner up from the NCV contest?

Re: Protege Delay Status as of 12/19/2006

Leaving out the existing denomoniated colors, which would be best to match with the other NV chip if it were only a set of 2?

I can't even match my socks. So I'll just watch.

Re: Protege Delay Status as of 12/19/2006

I'd love to see plaques for sure but a second NCV could work. Go with the Hot Pink baby (#18 from JM's link) -- now that chip will stand out on the final table! If a second NCV is produced, I agree with JM to make it easy and go with one of those existing mock ups.

Re: Protege Delay Status as of 12/19/2006

Thanks for the update, delays have been frustrating but I also would rather wait for a first rate product than live with a rush job.

On other denoms --- probably in the minority here but I have been a fan of a $20.00 for cash games. Easy rebuys for twenty dollar bills. As nice as that would be, emptypocs idea of a second NV is more flexable.

Any progress on the Protege cards? Just wishing for bridge size - reg. index.
