This one may come down to the wire. Good luck Johnny5!

This one is tough for me . I'm going to have to think about it for a while and come back. They both have strong merits, but couldn't be more different from each other.

Re: Protege Inlay Design 2nd Round Face-Offs (VegasMike -vs- Johnny5)

I'm not crazy about a few of the edge spot color-matched inlays on the side A of Johnny5's submission, but the black inlay background on side B with the gradient is truly a work of art IMHO.

No disrespect to VegasMike's design, as he's done a great job as well here, but this vote count really surprises me. I expected Johnny5 to be in the final four for sure, if not the final two or winning it all. Is there an element of J5's design that doesn't sit well with you? I'd be interested to hear anyone/everyone's opinion.

Re: Protege Inlay Design 2nd Round Face-Offs (VegasMike -vs- Johnny5)

If I could change anything about Johnny 5's design,I'd just put side A on both sides. But that's just me. Black inlays are striking, but are hard to design for IMO. Too little and it looks cheap and amaturish...too much and it looks busy and the composition gets lost.
The black sides look too busy to me and I fear the design would look too busy at actual printing size.

EDIT: I voted for him anyways though. And it was the only one I had any real trouble deciding on.

This one here has been by far the hardest choice to make! I would have rather seen these two as finalists...but the people have spoken!

Good luck to both artists!

I agree about the colors not being quite right, but then Johnny did say he had little time to make modifications, so his first draft is really all we have.

I'm also surprised by the voting. Nothing against Mike's inlay (except of course that he stomped mine like a NARC at a biker rally ).
I was also hoping to see J5 go far because it's so very different from all the other inlays.

Side A kills it for me. It's both incoherent and overwhelming to me. The shrunken background pattern becomes way too busy almost to the point of just being noise. Also, some of the inlays clash horribly and some of them get lost in the chip.

(Side B on the other hand is outstanding. Put that on both sides and you have my vote.)

You mention you're not crazy about a few of the side A's but imply you would still prefer the design. To me, that's enough to lose my vote. If I owned the chipset, I would be unhappy every time one of those sides splashes face up in the pot, hence I cannot vote for it. VM's is consistently fine-looking across every chip.

Re: Protege Inlay Design 2nd Round Face-Offs (VegasMike -vs- Johnny5)

I didn't want to say anything while the voting was going on, so now that its over, I'll give an opinion. I like J5's design, with some specific exceptions like the side A $100. But overall, I don't think this design fit the criteria/theme of the contest. To me it doesn't represent opulence or luxury, etc. Its a cool generic design, but not what I'd call luxurious.

Congrats Mike!

Some good comments here, where was that during the feedback stage? Oh well, I probably wouldn't have had the time to rework it anyway.

I agree that there were some issues with the final design and it wasn't quite finished off as I had imagined.

Thanks, but I disagree (obviously). My main goal was to create something generic as requested, so I didn't want to use a fake casino name or any other 'themed' imagery (to be honest it was hard NOT to, as that approach generally tends to work quite well). To say that my design doesn't meet the theme of the contest seems bogus to me, though I'm interested to hear your thoughts on how your submission fits the criteria of luxury better than mine.

I tried to do something totally different with this, but in the end I guess it didn't work very well. Thats how it goes sometimes.
