Chips: 4,014 | | | Protege Contestant #23: FL70 Despite having no artistic skills and no graphic design progam, I thought I'd give it a go.
My attempt was to replicate the Gold medals you see on cigar bands. Please forgive the extreme roughness of the text, the mismatched colors, etc. This was done in PowerPoint.
This first post represents the "original submission" only, and enables the initiation of the discussion thread on this chip submission. This thread now belongs to FL70, and he may use his first post within this tread to post updates/changes to his submission, which will ultimately be the design of his that gets submitted into the voting rounds on July 17th.
Feedback, comments, & constructive criticism encouraged!

Chips: 741 | | | Re: Protege Contestant #23: FL70 Not a bad start -- especially for PowerPoint. And I wouldn't worry too much about mismatched colors -- colors aren't going to match on the display versus the printed piece anyway, so as long as you can get a decent approximation, there'll be plenty of time to tweak colors later on.
I do think the "distressed typeface" on the denomination numbers is a bit much, but you've got a really good basic design going! I'm really curious to see where this one goes.
Nice job! |

Nice job! | Yeah, I've got mad PowerPoint skilz.
Is there any decent program out there that's either shareware or very-inexpensive-ware that would be used for this?
I used that font (Starshine, I think) for the numbers for two reasons:
1) When it's larger you can see that it has a Vegas-y feel.
2) It was narrow enough to fit in the center oval.
I'm certainly not attached to it.
I had trouble getting the shaped inlays to work with these, but it was my intention to use them.
I'll make some modifications tonight and repost. |

If there's anyone who's savvy with one of these program who'd like to collaborate, please let me know. Otherwise I'll never get anything decent submitted. |

I have a little bit of time now, but I don't have gimp or know how to use it. I'll make it in Illustrator and if gimp won't open it, dl the free photoshop and open it in there.
EDIT: Got some Illustrator files, let me know your e-mail address and I'll send 'em.

Chips: 597 | | | Re: Protege Contestant #23: FL70 I found this a while back, figured I would post the link for all the cigar related designs. http://195.2.85.140/countries_tools/countries/
Someone out there has been collecting cigarette packs for a very long time. He ( I assume he) has sorted this amazing collection into countries. I can't find the original start page, just the index directory of all the countries.
Cuba itself has quite a lot of interesting package designs in it.
Should be ripe for some inspiration.

I was on the road when I downloaded GIMP. It was chosen because it was a 10 minute download compared to 1 hour 30 minutes for Photoshop. |

Chips: 1,375 | | | Re: Protege Contestant #23: FL70 OK, got PhotoShop and used the handy tutorial posted in the thread by Po.
This is a little closer to what I had in mind.
I had some trouble wrapping the text (as is obvious) and I don't particularly like that font.
I was hoping to use a crown more like this one:
It's a subtle difference, I know, but I like this one better. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
