Protege Contestant #21: Johnny5

My submission attempts to convey the theme of 'luxury' and I have chosen a two-sided design with common elements on both.

Side A: Body/spot colored background with pattern overlay and body/spot matched text.
Side B: Black background with body colored decorative element and spot matched text.

I have included a proof of three denoms in the set for reference. I have altered each denom representation to show various possible 'tweaks' to the design, including three inlay styles (Shaped/Round/Giant). Side B also shows the inlay with and without center text, and with solid/faded background element. In addition, I have also included a 4th denom 'enhanced' mockup for a more real world simulation.

3 Denom Proof:

Great design - though I expected no less.

For these I'd say no to the shaped inlays. No good reason, just don't appeal as mush as the other.

Also, is there any inlay size between the middle and right examples?

Uh, oh, J5's in town..

I like where these are going.
For the inlay, my personal preference order is:
1. Shaped. (I just love shaped inlays, and think those would really distinguish this set)
2. Round. The $1 mockup is pretty sweet. (I'm less excited about the $500, but not sure why --- maybe it's just the color combination)
3. Giant. I've come to dislike giant inlays on clay chips. If you want full graphics, just go for ceramics. The biggest problem with giant inlays on clay is that it really compromises their stacking. Giant inlays on clays make the chips too slippery. Also, they obscure the mold and edgespots, which is part of the attraction of clays, IMO).

I like the mockiup of the $25 -- it looks like money. The contrast might be a bit low, though (especially on the reverse side), making the denom a bit hard to read.

NIce looking set.

I do not like the giant inlay. I wouldn't mind see a few more chips in the shaped and round inlays.

Awesome as usual!

I like the shaped inlays but I'll hold off till the full mock is up. I like the grand inlay the least... cool but favor the other two more.

Any significance to the fleur de lis like shape? Very cool.

Re: Protege Contestant #21: Johnny5

Very nice (not that anyone's really al that surprised)!

I've always gone back and forth on the oversized inlays, and even considered it for my own design. But I always thought it seemed out of place on a nice clay chip. Just an opinion.

As for the shaped inlays, I'm torn as to what to recommend. On the one hand, the shaped inlays are really becoming significant in the contest portion of this undertaking. Hell, I redesigned my own entry to take advantage of them. But in your case, I agree that the round inlays look better. Maybe it's the strong correlation between the chip color and the inlay. The shape detracts from it.

Bang-up job!

Whoa. Super sweet so far. I really like the larger inlay for the higher denom.

Me too. As I PM'd you on (I think), the idea of a different size (larger) inlay for the higher denoms is a novel idea. I'm not aware of any chip out there that does this. Might look classy, and they do it with currency (e.g. size of penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar, etc.) all the time.
