This needs more. It seems too simple to me.

Re: Protege Contestant #8: beowulfe

I suppose it is not all that original as generic type logo for jewelry stores, etc. - but I cant' recall it being associated with any casinos, so I went with it.
I'm a novice at photoshop/gimp, so I've only used some of the basic tools.

A basic A/B design, the colors of the diamond and denoms being taken from edge spot colors , where applicable. Not sure how to handle the $1 chip with white edge spots - maybe used white base and blue (invert the colors).

I was going for simple, hopefully not simplistic.

I knew going in that I would be probably be outclassed. Based on the other submissions, I was correct. But if you don't try....

I understand, but I'm going for a classic, clean look. I was thinking about spelling out
the denoms around the edge of the Aside of the chip - or adding some kind of wording. I don't know what yet.

Re: Protege Contestant #8: beowulfe

I'll agree that it may need work, but I think you're definitely onto a worthwhile design concept here. The diamond is definitely a nice anchor, and I like the simplicity of the composition (I can just picture it fleshed out in an old-style typeface, with dramatic ascenders/descenders on the numerals).

Nice work!

Thanks! Any suggestion for an old-style typeface?

Re: Protege Contestant #8: beowulfe

Oh, let's see... making me harken back to my typography days... any variation that specifies "old style figures" in the name is a good bet -- they concentrate more on the classical look of the numerals rather than having them line up nice and neat in mathematical tables. They're also not monospaced, so the kerning lines up nice. I'm partial to Minion myself. Try looking for any face that has a dedicated small caps typeface -- the pairings often go together.

Re: Protege Contestant #8: beowulfe

I was going to post this idea in the general discussion thread, but since you went with a diamond I'll try it here.

How about a different gemstone for each chip? Some ideas:

25c - White - Ivory or Quartz or Agate
1 - Blue - Sapphire or Opal
5 - Red - Ruby or Jasper
25 - Green - Emerald or Jade
100 - Black - Black Pearl or Obsidian (or Diamond?)
500 - Purple - Amethyst or Garnet
1000 - Yellow - Topaz
5000- Brown - Amber (or Gold?)
NCV - Orange-ish - Coral or ?????

Of course there are other possibilities; this Wikipedia page has a good reference.

The Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Diamond, and Amethyst are traditionally considered the main "precious stones"; they could cover the 1 through the 500 if the diamond is used on the 100. I do kind of like the idea of a black pearl, though.

Anyway, just throwing the idea out there.

Re: Protege Contestant #8: beowulfe

Don't know if this helps or not, but I laid out some numerals and text in the Minion typeface I mentioned. I did it in black-and-white, so hopefully you could use this image to create masks in Photoshop to generate text in whatever colors you want.

Don't know if this is the text treatment you're looking for (it's pretty different from what you started out with), but I thought that as a first step, I'd keep within the same font family. At the very least, I'm hoping this might point you into the right direction. (Frankly, if you can find a typeface with more dramatic flourishes -- Minion is still pretty conservative -- you may be even better off. Just my 2¢.)

(Oh, and for purposes of the competition, this is not to be considered an "artistic contribution" -- this is provided gratis, without any requirement for attribution or implication of "collaboration." Just to be clear.)
