Chips: 275 | | | Re: Protégé Stage 3 - Tweaking the Set The only place you might find "progression" in a casino chip is among the $1 and .25 chips. Obviously, because they're cheques, a casino wouldn't invest more in a chip than it is worth at face value. As soon as you hit $5, they get as wild or as plain as you might like.
But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what a casino does; a home set has no limitations...except that it should look good. The chips will be standard colors AND they'll have denoms. "Progression," then, becomes a style choice and nothing more. Sidepot will sell more chips if the cash guys AND the Tourney guys like the set. If that means progression, so be it. If not, chuck it.
FWIW, I agree with JM that just because you can doesn't mean you should. The chip-factory offers so many options, it's easy to get carried away.
Lastly, and then I'll go hide: assuming the present track, most people will take their inlay design and try to adjust it to match the chips (tweaked, retweaked, or otherwise). It's been said before, but I have to agree that choosing chips without any clue as to the vibe/feel/theme of an inlay seems like an odd thing. To stick with the coffee analogy: Starbucks uses green and white because it's in their logo, not because they pre-ordered a shipment of green and white cups.
Mostly, though, I'm just super excited to see everybody's inlay contributions.

Chips: 1,375 | | | Re: Protégé Stage 3 - Tweaking the Set The problem with this approach is that you let your 25˘ chip, which is going to be the least colorful/creative/inspiring, define your set.
The best way to implement this approach (if at all) would be to start with the $100 (black) and work outwards, because it's most like to be involved in both cash and tourney sets. Quote: |

Ensuring the chips progressed logically color-wise and "fit" together would occur as a by-product, since people would be able to look at the .25 cent chip chosen and say "Now which $1 chip goes best with this?".

Chips: 817 | | | Re: Protégé Stage 3 - Tweaking the Set Maybe we should be thinking in terms of 'paired' chips that look somewhat of the same family.
By that I mean the 25 cent and 1 dollar chip, 5 and 25 are sort of like each other, 100 with the 500, etc.
When I play with the Factory and the Forge, I seem to constantly compare these side by side.
(By the way, I hate the red 5 and green 25. Christmas time yuckfest. But that's just me.)
In my head I usually see pots with two color chips in them. So if it looks good visually in pairs, then I like it.
There's nothing worse than looking at a pot with three or four denoms in it looking like someone puked up Skittles.
At my house multiple denom pots (more than three) rarely happen. Maybe we're tight little buggers, who knows, but that's what I see in my head.
I've been thinking in terms of pairs these days.
Also, this way people can sort of pick and choose between pairs of chips. Kind of like "I'm gonna buy the 5-25 but gonna skip that 100-500 set for the next pair".
As it is, even if I was in the market, I'd only buy max four denoms.
Maybe even three.

And BTW, I agree that 3 denoms is about the max it makes sense to have on the table at any given time. But it's nice to have a set with more denoms, if you're:
a) playing a larger tournament, where you'll need to color-up chips and introduce higher denoms
b) support rebuys (just use one or two larger chips for this)
c) support both cash and tournement games with the same set
d) support a variety of stakes for the cash games.
we now return you to your regular thread...

Or do you mean you hate the nominated (on p.1) red and green? |

Chips: 817 | | | Re: Protégé Stage 3 - Tweaking the Set Eh, the page 1 submission 5 and 25 don't move me out of my stupor enough.
I am not excited about them. Thought my submission eons ago was kickin, but the masses shot me down quick. Guilty of the Skittles Effect on my higher denoms anyway. (Sub # 12 in Vote B)
Thanks for reminding everyone that the 5 must remain red and the 25 green though. |
