Chips: 36,209 | | | Protégé Stage 2 - Color Discussions I know from earlier discussions that some of you would like to design the inlays first, and then the colors. As a design point of view, that is correct. But for fairness and manufacturer logistics, we must choose colors first.
WE CAN CHANGE THE COLORS LATER! In the last stage, the inlay finalists can offer tweaks on the color choices to better fit their designs. We'll run polls just to be sure everyone agrees.
Reasons why colors must come first: - Manufacturer must approve the colors and edge spot combinations. This is to prevent anything resembling a real casino's colors and designs. They will NOT do this more than four times for this entire contest, so we have to limit this approval process to once at the beginning, and once for each of the final three inlay entrants.
- There must be a fair playing field for inlay designers. Some designers can do great mockups with chips and colors We want to finalize colors, then offer the mockup blanks for all inlay entrants to use. That leave JUST THE INLAY to differentiate among the designers at that stage. Since the inlay part of this contest (not the color choices) is what gets someone $750, we must make it as fair as possible.
- Don't give away your ideas! This one is for your own benefit! This is a contest remember, why give everyone esle your idea now?

X-files and Johnny5 worked feverishly over the last couple of weeks to get this done for you. Let's see some color mockups!

1) denominations
2) inlays that are simple & classic, not overly busy. Generally prefer white background unless giant or full face graphic. Since this is Blue Chip, I'd love to see a giant inlay!!
3) edge spots - progressive with set, but not necessary. Colors should compliment the base chip and inlay.
4) colors - nice, sharp colors that look good with inlay and edge spot color.
5) Blue $1 chip . But it greatly depends on the shade of blue. I like the mirage chip below.
My favorite chips in no particular order are:
Coronado Beach- I like the shaped inlays and spot progression and the inlay is clean and simple. Except for the green chip, I like the color/spot choices.
Palmas - love the colors and spot progressions. Inlay is simple and classic. I love the RD $5 chip and RD $100 chip (lavendar spots).
Mirage - love the colors and edge spots, inlay is classy with great colors.
Pictures below from: http://www.silver-state-treasures.com
Vineyard - I like the full face graphic, colors and edge spots on these chips. Like the grapes theme and the gradiant inlay colors. My favorite is the $10 chip!

What? A green chip without pink? Genius. Navy blue is the new black.
Show me a better purple chip. [/quote] |

Tossing some base-color ideas around might be a nice holdover until the factory is open. |

also, i think a general rule of thumb would be to have increasing complexity in edge spotting as values increase |

Chips: 726 | | | Re: Protégé Stage 1 - Master Thread - General Discussion You sure you want that green for the $25?
It gets dirty fast.
I've been shuffling this Ambassador chip with other reds and blacks, stupid, I know, but it got dirty FAST.
That Dunes green at the top of the post page is NICE. Love THAT green. |

But I like the day green as well, a la:
I know Paulsons tend to transfer color pretty easily. Are we to expect the same from BC? |

Chips: 2,872 | | | Re: Protégé Stage 1 - Master Thread - General Discussion I'm boring/traditional. I favor blue for $0.25, white for $1, red for $5, green for $25, black for $100, purple for $500, yellow for $1000, and pink for $5000. Given that all these denoms will be part of the set and the middle colors are not really up for debate other than shade, the real question seems to be what color to use for the low and high end. I've stated my preference, but I could live with a grey $5000 or blue $1. I don't like the idea of a white $0.25 however, so just swapping those colors doesn't work for me. I also prefer muted colors to loud/day-glo shade.
There is the possibility for two additional chips. Assuming my color choices win, that only leaves grey and brown available. I would propose that both of these be NCV. That allows us to satisfy both the people who want $0.50, $2, or $10 for their cash game set and people who want $10k and $25k chips for ultra-high value tourney sets.
The only problem with NCV is edgespots if the progressive spot idea that so many seem to favor wins out. Personally, I'd prefer a single edgespot pattern. Just because we have a lot of edgespot options available to us, doesn't mean we have to try to use all of them. As I said, I'm boring, but I think a single edgespot pattern ties the set together thematically better and allows us to use the other two colors as NCV. Not to mention that the people only interested in a cash set don't feel like they're missing out on the "cool" edgespots. I can already foresee that I'm probably going to lose this one and can only hope that the edgespot progression doesn't get too crazy.
I also think it is going to be difficult to decide on edgespot progression on a chip-by-chip basis, so if we do end up going that route, it probably needs to be done on a set-by-set basis.
I'm not crazy about faux shaped inlays. The color matching (or rather lack thereof) could end up cheapening the look of the set. It also restricts inlay designers by cutting down on the available design area. If we are stuck with round inlays, let's just concentrate on getting a kick-butt design. We've got plenty of things to argue about/discuss/decide already without adding one that may ultimately make the set look worse. |
