Protege Contestant #17: agalvan

It uses the theme of cigar labels. I wanted to incorporate the cigar from the mold into the inlay somhow. A cigar label is a classy way to dress up a plain looking cigar. I figure why not use them as a classy way to dress up these chips.

The images in the sample photo below are actual cigar labels just to "hold my spot" (I hope this doesn't disqualify me). I will be working on my own images that wil incorporate the colors and denominations of the chips. I quickly came up with one inalay that incorporates the denominations (you can use that one if the other one would disqualify me).

This first post represents the "original submission" only, and enables the initiation of the discussion thread on this chip submission. This thread now belongs to algalvan, and he may use his first post within this tread to post updates/changes to his submission, which will ultimately be the design of his that gets submitted into the voting rounds on July 17th.

I like this one a lot - and it's the first double-sided entry I have seen. Look forward to seeing your cigar label designs.

Re: Protege Contestant #17: agalvan

Yeah, with all of the cigar-label-inspired designs, I'm really craving one right about now...

I think you're off to a really promising start -- and I'm intrigued by the idea of dramatically different inlays across the board (but with a consistent, recognizable theme). Obviously, it'll need some work to develop all the original designs (obviously can't use the actual cigar labels), but there's definite potential.

Good work!

How about one of these? Cohiba Diademas - custom made for the King Juan Carlos II of Spain. Probably a street value of $500@!

Pretty nice, but I'd like to see where your actualy designs take you. I think that it'll be a big challenge to make them look like they belong together. GL!

Like mentioned above, I think the key is to make it look like they all belong together. Great idea though, see if you can pull it off.

I like the label from the $25 chip the best. If you do a good job on just one of these, I think it could be used for the whole set swapping out just the denomination. Just capture the scent of a cigar label, and make it work as a chip label. Remember, there is a ton going on with this chip line already (between the edge spot progression and the shaped inlays) so even the simplest inlay will look great, and the inlay may prove to be the one thing that holds the whole set together. That's the artist challenge, but it could come out huge!

**UPDATED 7/13/2006 @ 1:30 pm PST**
**I'LL POST ALL ARTWORK TO THIS POST**

Thanks for the comments everybody!

Sidepot, I also love the label from the $25 chip. I think I can come up with one design to use on all the chips. I'll be working on this as much as possible. Hopefully I don't get fired from my job in the process.

************************************************** *************************************

Here is my initial design. I have to admit that I am a little discouraged after seeing everybody else's designs. Mine seems pretty simple in comparison to most.

Fire away everybody!!

************************************************** ************************************************** ***********

Here is another version. I made the text larger, changed it from black to white, and added the word CIGAR to the top.

************************************************** *****************************************

How about one of these:

************************************************** ************************************************** ********************************************
Here are the final 2 designs:

Um... yeah, I think that's a risk we've all run a bit too often in the past few weeks...
