Chips: 377 | | | Hat and Cane Chip I found I found a Hat and Cane (top hat with a Cane across it) at a antique shop. Paid like $.50 for it. I can't tell what it is made of, kinda feels like plastic but sound like clay, not heavy, so it doesn't seem to have a metal insert. It has an "OP" hotstamp on one side and "$1" on the other. How many companies made or used the Hat/Cane mold? If my camera was working, I would post a pic, but alas, that little item has yet to be replaced. |

Paulson is the only manufacture with that mold. Actually, they have a few variations of it but regardless, any hat and cane chip is a Paulson.

Chips: 36,201 | | | Christy and Jones is the only other seller of that mold, but it's hard to tell the difference unless you have side spots on yours. Can you post a photo/scan? |

Chips: 377 | | | No pics, camera is dead. It has no side spots. I will try to scan it at the parent's house tomorrow. |

Chips: 1,728 | | This might help in determining if it is a Christy & Jones or Paulson chip. http://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/christypaulson.htm
though it may be difficult to differentiate between the two if it is one of the older Paulson chips that were manufactured by Burt Co, who also manufactured the Christy & Jones TH&C chips. And just to add confusion into the mix, the clay chips on the Nevada and Diecard molds from the Nevada Dice (aka Bud Jones, of Christy & Jones) were also made by the Burt Co (now Chipco, though the Burt Co. molds are went to ASM) ... and of course, the Nevada mold is now at Blue Chip, owned by Nevada Jacks Also, the horsehead mold that is currently from ASM was also originally from Christy & Jones. Head spinning yet? Quote: |

Chips: 1,728 | | Incestious as it may seem, that's not even half of the story. The other half is that there were only two primary manufacturers of compression molded chips in the country at the time, Burt Company and TR King. Christy & Jones and Paulson (headed by Paul Endy Jr.) both originally had all of their chips manufactured at Burt Company. The part that would probably qualify for a Paul Harvey "The Rest of the Story" segment is that TR King was founded and owed by Paul Endy Sr., and had helped fund his son's purchase of Christy & Jones in 1963. Think about that one the next time someone posts about Paulson being the 'only' chip Quote: |
