First post, but have been reading chiptalk since it began. Alot of great info here (Thanks Ten!), and I'm really looking forward to getting a set of the Pharaoh's!
Take a look at the final price of this auction on ebay that ended today for a 1st issue Dunes chip.
Money is relevant to how much you have. If someone's a multi-millionaire, this is no big deal and a fair price. Just ask the average person about your chips. Most people would think it's absolute insanity to buy a set of Pharoes for $1000 when you could get the same amout of a different kinf of chip, with case, for $49.99 on Ebay.
I collect old Vegas chips, but there is no way I could justify spending that amount on a single chip! For me, there is something almost magical about an older chip and I've spent quite a bit over the past couple years since entering the hobby. But $22,000 for a single chip is unreal!!
Right now, antique chips are extremely popular, and getting a good deal is becoming harder and harder to find. Prices are regularly exceeding the high price guide values.
I was ashamed when I purchased an older $25 Thunderbird chip from the 1940's for $160 (valued around $400), but now I don't feel so bad!
You have got to be kidding me. If someone has that kind of money to spend, they should just give it to me. I would put it to better use...
