Paulson Dunes Set - recommendations?

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the Dunes set. Anyone have any recommendations, good or bad?

Specifically, how used is the set you received? Dirt-ground-into-the-mold dirty? Edges sharp or dull?

I don't expect the set to be out-of-the-box new, but I don't want to buy a set that has seen extensive wear, either.

I bought a few individual $5 chips from Spinetti's (eBay) and some other $5 and $25 from other eBay sellers. I did not buy any of the "Mint Uncirculated" chips from one seller, all mine were "table played."

All the chips I bought had been professionally cleaned, so they were not at all dirty. In fact, they were too clean for my taste... I like a little character. I had to oil them a couple of times before the oil soaked in and they felt right to me.

Mine appear to be well-used, in that most of the edges are pretty rounded, but the molds are still reasonably sharp. They shuffle well and stack OK.

One note -- they are a little thinner than most other chips. I don't know if this is from wear and/or cleaning, or whatever. I can fit 21 Dunes in a regular Paulson 20 rack.

I bought mine to collect, and don't have a large enough set for playing. I would certainly use them for a playing set, but I did not want to spend that much cash.

Here are some pictures of the faces and edges of a few representative sample chips. Chip #4 will stand on edge, but that's the exception... most are too rounded. But don't get me wrong, I really like these chips!

Thanks for the response, Tomb. Those look great -- the mold is awesome. I'm curious to see if anyone else has bought the set -- I think someone on here said that they had.

I ended up upgrading my set to uncirculated. The 25's and 100's were in nice shape, but the 5's were just too used for me. Considering the amount of money I was spending I wanted to have no regrets. I love these chips, we used them last night and they were a big hit. Spinettis customer service is first rate too. I just made a call, sent the original chips back with a check for the difference and had my uncirculated chips in less than a week.

So you returned just the $5 chips and upgraded to uncirculated? Just curious how this worked.

After they received my order they called me and asked me if I wanted to upgrade to uncirculated (I sold my Vineyards for a nice profit and was buying 3 sets of the Dunes). I passed at the time because it would no longer be an even trade (I would be out of pocket cash if I upgraded). After saying "no" I was already considering upgrading, but I waited until the chips arrived. The 25's and 100's would have been fine, but the 5's had alot of character to them. I guess I didn't consider just upgrading the 5's - and I'm not even sure if it was an option, I sent the whole lot back and upgraded. Miko over there was great as I'm sure I was a pain. I upgraded and bought 50 extra 5's and 25 extra 25's. I'm not sure if I got a nice deal because I was buying 1000 of these or not, and I'm not sure how many uncirculated chips they have. The only thing I'm sure about is that these chips are awesome! Spinettis customer service department is the best, give them a call.

If you want a collectible, it's a nice set.
If you want functional, get a set of new Paulsons. No chips feel or handle better.
If you can wait a few weeks, get the Pharaohs. They will likely be even better and cheaper.
I don't know how many of these sets exist. I think it may be a lot.
Does anybody kow why no $1 dunes chips are on the market?
Where are they???
