Chips: 10,807 | | | So, What's a Round Robin?... Over on TheChipBoard, CC>CC member Terry Shaffer organized a Non-Nevada, Non-Atlantic City, $1 and fractionals Round Robin (RR). I jumped at the chance to participate because RR's is a great way to build a collection, especially if you have qualifying traders. (I will explain how it works in a moment.)
Turns out that a lot of us were eager for an RR and Terry quickly had 15 sign-ups. With a number like that, it's usually best to form two RR's of about 7 or 8 participants, but Terry decided to do it as a single RR.
So, Terry, from his own stacks of traders, amassed some 110 qualifying traders. $1's and fractionals from any where except Nevada and New Jersey, in new or near new condition. He then listed on paper what he was seeding the RR with and packaged them all up into a Priority Flat Rate USPS box and mailed it to the first person on the list of 15. (Terry gets to set the sequenece and typically you try to get the sequence such that the RR will zig-zag across the US (and Canada, if there is a Canadian participant.)
When received, that participant can take any and all the chips he/she wants, but replace each one with a like denomination and within the guidelines of condition. The participant crosses off (from the list) what he/she took and adds to the list what he/she added. It is OK to add more than you take, but not the other way around! Also, it is customary, but not required to add a special Thank You chip to the package that is ear-marked for the organizer. It is off-limits to everyone down the line.
In the sequence that Terry set forth, I was recipient #4 and the RR hit my mail box yesterday. I opened it and went about segregating the contents into two stacks, what I want and what I don't need. In this instance, my wants was a total of 56 chips!!!
So I then had the task of finding 56 apprpriate replacement chips, which I finished tonight. But before I package everything up and send to the next recipient, I thought I would show everyone who cares to view this thread with the scans of what came in, what I took and what I added back in.
Here are the scans....
What I received:
The three chips above are off-limits and were left by the 3 participants in front of me. (All three chips are snappers.) I suspect that participant #1 put in a snapper and 2 and 3 did not want to be outdone. (Yeah, I added a forth snapper!)
So, this is what I took: And this is what I added:
For good measure, I added an extra fractional (the Wood Haven above) thereby taking 56, replacing with 57 and adding a snapper for Terry. Tomorrow the RR heads of to Ohio and the next participant.
It was good RR for me!
Thanks for hanging in there for these grande scans!

Looks like you got a lot of great chips - and gave some excellent one as well. It was interesting to see the IL casino chips since I have used basically all of them at one point or another

I never started collecting chips until a few years ago, which was *AFTER* I stopped spending every last second I had in a casino.

I love the Y2K "luck inside" chip.
One thing I found interesting is the Casino Del Sol chip. Strange that they felt the need to also print on the chip, "acceptable at Casino Del Sol" |

So Terry got the names and order in which they will receive chips together. He then put together the original package of 110 chips. They make their way around the participants and get back to him with 110+ chips plus 14 gift chips since he did the organizing of the 15 people?
The one that was described was done by all CC>CC members, who in my experience operate to a high ethical standard. Is it assumed based on a qualifying chip (in this example non-Nevada, non-AC $1 and fractional chips) all have a similar value? How do you porevent someone from taking a chip valued at say $10 and replacing it with a chip valued at $2?
I think I would be game for participating, but I don't think I have enough chips to start one.

One thing I found interesting is the Casino Del Sol chip. Strange that they felt the need to also print on the chip, "acceptable at Casino Del Sol" | The flip-side of the chip is "Casino of the Sun". It also indicates that it is "acceptable at Casino of the Sun". This Indian casino (Pascua Yaqui Tribe) has two separate casinos, about 2 miles apart. The original facility was/is named Casino of the Sun and tyhe newer facility was/is named Casino del Sol. (Same name, two different languages.) All current chips have both names and the chips are valid at both facilities. I guess someone thought the chips needed the additional instruction. For my tastes, I would have "acceptable at Casino del Sol" printed on the "Casino of the Sun" side and vice versa.
BTW-The chip is a Chipco ceramic and is only used in the poker room, which only the Casino del Sol facility spreads poker. There is a newer, Paul-Son H&C chip that is used for table games (at both locations) and it too has both casinos identified, but not the "acceptable..." wording. I put one in the RR. See scan #1 of added chips, first column, third chip from the bottom ("Casino del Sol").

Chips: 95 | | | Re: So, What's a Round Robin?... That is an interesting way to build a collection. It was cool seeing the River Cree Resort chip in the mix, the Edmonton area casinos represent.
My questions about this process are (sorry if they were already addressed) :
- Is a participant allowed to add a chip into the set that is already present or add multiples (not the whole envelope worth but 2 or 3) of the same chip? For example if someone has a spare River Cree Fractional, and there is already one in the envelope can they trade another in? There is no guarantee that one will disappear before the envelope finishes its trek, does the RR starter really want two of the same chip when in theory he probably wouldn't have traded for a second one. But on the other hand it gives newer traders a chance to diversify if they haven't been to casinos outside their home base.
- Is there any rule regarding trading for like chips? Does the trade have to be Chipco for Chipco/Bud Jones for Bud Jones?
- Is there a membership criteria or minimum contribution requirement on the chipboard to have been involved?
I am not a member of the chipboard or a CC>CC member but I would have jumped at this even if I would have only been able to boost my extremely small collection by 4 or 5 chips.
Thanks for sharing Jim, your posts have made recent members like myself become stricken with "the sickness".

| Any and all rules are established by the organizer and all participant volunteer to join in. However, it is customary to include a rule that prohibits adding a duplicates. This is done because it lessens the number of available traders to the in-between recipients.
Quote: |

| Only if the rules are set-up that way. I've not seen that, but I have seen hot-stamp only RR's, paper inlay only RR's, wet chip only RR's (cruise lines) and other specific categories. I've even done an uncirculated only RR. Quote: |

| Again, this is organizer determined, but you should know a few things about the "screening" that happens on TheChipBoard. TheChipBoard is an open BBS. It is accessible to the public at-large and anyone with a computer and an internet access can post there. The CC>CC is a corporate entity organized as a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization. Membership is based on paid dues and acceptance of the Club's Constitution, By-Laws and enforceable Code-of-Ethics. It is the Code-of-Ethics that (in this instance Terry) was looking to leverage off of when he stipulated that participants must be members of the CC>CC.
The Code-of-Ethics does not make us better people, or more trustworthy, but it does allow fellow members to have an inherent trust. As members we send eBay purchases before they are paid for. We send 100's of dollars worth of chips to fellow members just to look at and make selections and return the others. We automatically offer a 10-day money back guarantee (one of the Codes) to fellow members. On on it goes.
Quote: |

| CC>CC membership was and often is a requirement. And you remind me of my very first RR, as a participant. When I received it I immediately found 9 chips that I wanted. Unfortunately I only had 6 traders and 4 of them were already in the RR! At that moment I vowed that would always have traders in excess of what I might want from an RR. It was a horrible feeling to pass on 7 chips, in my hands and only get 2! Quote:

| The sickness does not go away! I have progressed from a 2-trade RR to a 56-trade RR! Talk about a sick puppy!
Again, I welcome you to ChipTalk, please consider membership in the CC>CC and if you vist and post on TheChipBoard, their protocol asks for a personal name (not a screen name) and a valid email addy.
Feel free to ask questions here. There are more people than myself that can provide responses.

Chips: 315 | | | Re: So, What's a Round Robin?... Nice idea. But I could see how it would get messy if we did it, with cases of playable sets flying around the country.
I was interested to see that Rainbow Casino chip-- it looks like a B&G?
I recently took an interest in B&G as I recently acquired a lot of Ocean Jewel chips and because I learned that one of the casinos near me (Fallsview) uses B&Gs.
