Red face Help and advice appreciated!

Hi!

I'm a newbie - just started collecting a few $1 Vegas chips and would love to get as much advice or help as possible from people who know what they are talking about! What's the best way to get started? I've seen a few chips on Ebay - should I just go for the ones I like the look of? My options are a little limited as I'm in England.

And advice for a lady new to all this?

Lennie x

Re: Help and advice appreciated!

Welcome to the forum!

This is one of the best place to start. I would start by going through some of the posts in this section. There are a few people that has a good collection of $1 casino chips. You should check them out and see if they are willing to sell their traders to you. Of cause there's also M2M but don't usually have that many casino chips for sale there. I'm no expert but getting the chips to you will probably cost you some good money. Try and find someone that has a lot of the ones you like so you can save on shipping.

Another good place to go is thechipboard.com. That where a lot of the CCGTCC member hang out, go through that site and you'll know what it's about. There are also many chips for sale there too.

And of cause there's are tons of chips on ebay.

Good luck! By the way, you can kiss you money goodbye now.

Welcome to the board!

There are few good posts here in the collector's corner, so make sure read a few of them. Feel free to ask questions on this board, someone usually always answers.

Also, check out the CCGTCC (which is short for Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collector's Club) website. There is an education section to read up about collecting, etc. Be sure to check out the latest Buyers Guide.

http://www.ccgtcc.com/index.html

Finally, see below for a UK based website that is run by long time CCGTCC member, David Spragg. Check it out and it may be cheaper for shipping than from US.

Have fun!

Re: Help and advice appreciated!

My advice is similar to those above. First work out what you want to collect.

If you just want current house $1 Las Vegas house chips then buy a collection off ebay. You can usually get a bunch of 30 or so at a reasonable price. Confirm shipping charges first though. Shipping should be around $12 for a Global Priority Flat Rate envelope from the US to the UK. This is how I started my collection.

Then I decided to collect obsolete $1 Las Vegas chips as well, and now I'm addicted, and usually broke.

I can't recommend enough to buy chips in lots to save on postage. I am in Australia so know how much postage hurts. Some sellers are really good about postage, and most on the ChipBoard (and here), if they are willing to post out of the States, will just charge you cost only. Always insist on USPS airmail letterpost as this is the cheapest option for a few chips. A Global Priority Flat Rate envelope is the cheapest for quantities (like 30 chips) at about US$11.

Some sellers on ebay make money from shipping. Always check out shipping before you bid. One guy sent me 5 chips, charged me US$18.50 for shipping, and spent US$2.70. I won't be buying from him again.

David Spragg's site is great. I even buy chips from there and he is based in the UK. David is a really nice guy too.

Another good internet based seller is Andy Hughes.

Also, last but not least, if you are going to get into obsolete chips buy yourself a guide so you know what you should be paying. I recommend the United States Casino Chip Price Guide 3rd edition as a good starting point. Eventually you will also want The Chip Rack, but wait until the new edition comes out (I think mid next year).

When it comes to storage check out gmunnys thread.

Good luck and welcome.

Re: Help and advice appreciated!

Thanks guys! Some fab advice there -and I am going to check out all the links you've given me. I've got the 3rd edition of the US chips book (that's the latest one, right?? Is there a new one coming out soon?).

Hope to be on here a bit more and getting to know a few people too

Re: Help and advice appreciated!

Tell you the truth when I bought my first chips for my home game, they happened to be crystal parks casino. Then I moved on to another set and another , then when you see some many chips , certian ones will stand out. So thats what you get, and then you will want more and more and more, good luck and have fun.

Lennie, Not real soon. At least a year, may two years away.

I'd like to Welcome you to ChipTalk and also to chip collecting!

Locally, and yes I know that GB is a sizable country, David Spragg (MarlowCasinoChips) is your best bet. (He is on Holiday for several days here, but I'm sure he will be happy to respond to emails.)

As a newbie, be sure to visit the "sticky" under Chip Collecting General ( http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/chip-c...ster-list.html ) as there is a great deal of info and contacts there. (It is just under the Storage thread.) Be sure to visit the Newbie FAQ link.

I must also repeat about joining the CC&GTCC, Inc.

Again, Welcome to the hobby, if you will PM me your address, I will be happy to send you a couple of $1 Las Vegas chips to get you started as collectors, or as traders (if you already have them).

Jim (Gaming Ore) Follis

ps. I moved this to a better forum.
